Part 2
The server held her phone higher. “I recorded both slaps.”
Linda took one step toward her. “Put that away, Claire.”
So they knew each other. Claire worked for the catering company, but the fear in her face looked personal. She moved behind the bar before Linda could reach her. Megan got to my side and asked if I was hurt. I could barely answer. My cheek burned, and Ryan was still watching me as if I owed him an apology.
“Your sister started it,” he said to Megan.
“Your mother made a speech,” Megan replied. “We all heard it.”
I asked the room to let me leave. Ryan planted himself in front of the exit. He lowered his voice. “Come upstairs. We can fix this privately.”
“No.” I pulled out my phone and called 911.

I told the dispatcher my husband had struck me twice and was blocking the door. Ryan heard me say our location. He stepped aside, but Linda began telling the guests that I’d ruined the wedding over a harmless family tradition.
Claire walked over with her phone still in hand. “It wasn’t a tradition,” she whispered. “She rehearsed it.”
Linda heard her. “You are here to work, Claire.”
Claire faced me. “I’m Ryan’s cousin. Linda hired my company because she thought I would keep quiet.”
My stomach dropped. Claire played a short clip from earlier that afternoon. Linda’s voice came through clearly: “Get her into the apron after the ceremony. Once she refuses in front of everyone, Ryan will handle it.” Ryan answered, “She’ll do what I tell her.”
I looked at him.

“You planned this?”
Ryan reached for the phone, but Claire pulled it away.
“That’s all you heard,” Linda said sharply.
Claire shook her head and opened another recording. I heard Linda ask Ryan whether he’d told me about the papers in the upstairs suite. He said, “After she signs, it won’t matter what she thinks.”
My purse was upstairs. So were my ID and the signed marriage license. I hadn’t seen any other papers.
Megan squeezed my hand. “Stay here. The police are coming.”
But Ryan had already taken his keys from his pocket. He glanced toward the stairwell, where a side door stood open. Claire checked her phone and went pale.
“The woman with the folder is still up there,” she said. “I saw her go into your suite.”

I watched Ryan disappear through the door before either of us could stop him.
