“Did you know Ashley’s parents would own the place where I was supposed to live?”

He looked genuinely surprised.

“What do you mean?”

“Patricia and George intended to keep it in Patricia’s name.”

Daniel stared at me.

“Ashley said it would be yours.”

“Then someone has been lying to both of us.”

For a moment, hope flickered.

Perhaps Daniel had been manipulated more thoroughly than I understood.

Then he reached into his jacket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“Ashley gave me this yesterday.”

It was a draft letter addressed to my physician, expressing concern about my ability to make financial decisions and requesting an appointment to discuss those concerns.

The letter described behaviors I had never exhibited.

At the bottom was a blank signature line above Daniel’s printed name.

I looked up slowly.

“Did Ashley ask you to sign this?”

He nodded.

“She said we needed to establish that the family was trying to protect you.”

I could scarcely breathe.

“And what did you tell her?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I told her I would think about it.”

Before I could respond, his phone vibrated against the table.

Ashley’s name appeared on the screen.

He ignored it, but the message preview lit up beneath her name.

I saw enough to make my blood run cold.

“Did you get her to sign anything yet, and does she know about the doctor appointment George arranged?”
