Dominic was struggling against the officers, his mask of charm fully slipping away to reveal the monster beneath. “This is a violation of my rights! She’s hysterical! You can’t just barge into my house—my name is on the deed to this property! You need a warrant!”
Chloe stood up, turning to face him slowly. The sheer coldness in her expression made even Arthur, who had finally wandered out of the living room, take a cautious step back.
The Fall
“Actually, Dominic, we don’t need a warrant,” Chloe said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the room. She pulled a tablet from her tactical vest and tapped the screen. “We have exigent circumstances. And we have a witness.”
“A witness?” Victoria scoffed, clutching her wine glass like a lifeline. “We are the witnesses! We saw everything! She did this to herself!”
Chloe ignored her, looking directly at Dominic. “A witness that streamed the entirety of the last fifteen minutes directly to my precinct’s secure server.” She turned the tablet around.
On the bright screen was a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed of our kitchen. There was Dominic, twisting my arm. There was Dominic, forcing my hand onto the blazing burner. There was Victoria, stepping over my writhing body to pour her wine.
The color completely drained from Dominic’s face. His mouth opened, but no words came out. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the crackle of a police radio.
“You see, Dominic,” I said, finally finding the strength to stand. The paramedic hovered close, supporting my elbow. “You were so obsessed with making sure my name wasn’t on the house, or the cars, or the bank accounts… that you never bothered to check what was in my name.”
I pointed a trembling, uninjured finger toward the charging port beneath the island. “Smile for the cloud.”
“You… you bitch,” Dominic seethed, lunging forward. He didn’t make it a single step before the officers slammed him facedown onto the hardwood floor.
The sound of the handcuffs clicking shut around his wrists was the most beautiful music I had ever heard.
The Aftermath
“Dominic Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and unlawful imprisonment,” Chloe recited, her voice a hammer driving the final nails into his coffin.
“Do something!” Dominic screamed at his parents as the officers hauled him to his feet.
Arthur stood paralyzed, his mouth gaping like a fish. Victoria was hyperventilating, the wine glass finally slipping from her fingers and shattering on the floor.
“Oh, Victoria, don’t worry about the mess,” I said, my voice eerily calm as I looked at my mother-in-law. “You won’t be staying long enough to clean it up. Since the down payment for this house came entirely from my grandmother’s trust—which Dominic fraudulently transferred without my legal consent—my lawyers are already filing the paperwork. You and Arthur have until Monday to pack your bags.”
Dominic thrashed in the officers’ grip as they dragged him toward the door. “You’re nothing without me! I have the money! I have the company!”
“About the company,” I called out over his shouting. “The accounting software? I built it. Which means I have the administrator rights. Half an hour ago, I locked your servers, exported the real financial records, and sent a copy to the IRS. I hope you kept your receipts, Dominic.”
He stopped struggling. The reality of his absolute ruin finally crashed down on him, leaving him limp as the officers carried him out into the flashing lights of the driveway.
Chloe placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Ready to go to the hospital?”
I looked around the kitchen. The ruined steak, the shattered glass, the lingering smell of smoke. For eighteen months, this room had been my prison. Tonight, it was the graveyard of the man who thought he owned me.
