My Mother-in-Law Slapped Me to Protect Her Son’s Mistress—She Had No Idea the Corporate Chairwoman Was My Biological Mother: “Mom, Bankrupt Them!”
The slap cracked across my face before I could finish the sentence.
“You will not embarrass my son in front of another woman!” Linda screamed, planting herself between me and Megan, the woman my husband had been secretly seeing.
Jason stood behind his mother, pale but silent.
I touched my burning cheek. “Another woman? She was in our bedroom.”
Megan folded her arms. “Jason told me your marriage was already over.”
I looked at my husband. “You told her that?”
He finally spoke. “Emily, please. Not here.”
That was when Linda did something worse. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from him.
“You need to leave,” she hissed. “My son has finally found someone worthy of this family.”
I laughed because the alternative was crying. “You slapped me to protect your son’s mistress?”
“Watch your mouth.”
I reached into my purse for my phone. There was one contact I had been afraid to call for weeks. The woman I had recently discovered was my biological mother.
Victoria Carter.
Chairwoman of one of the largest private investment companies in the state.
We had only met twice since the DNA results came back. We were still learning each other’s voices, habits, and silences. I had never asked her for money. She had never offered.
But she had told me one thing before I left her office yesterday:
“If anyone ever tries to make you feel powerless, call me.”
Linda sneered. “Who are you calling? Your friends?”
“No,” I said, looking straight at her. “My mother.”
Jason’s face changed.
Megan suddenly stopped smiling.
Linda scoffed. “Your mother? That woman who abandoned you?”
I pressed CALL.
It rang once.
“Emily?” Victoria answered.
I swallowed hard.
“Mom,” I whispered, staring at Jason and his family, “bankrupt them.”
The room went completely silent.
Teaser
I thought the affair was the worst betrayal of my marriage—until my mother’s attorney arrived with a folder that contained my name, my forged signature, and a financial secret that could destroy the entire family.
Victoria did not ask me why.
“Send me your location,” she said. “And do not sign anything they put in front of you.”
I sent it.
Linda stared at my phone. “This is ridiculous.”
“No,” Jason muttered. “It isn’t.”
His voice was different now.
Megan noticed too. “Jason?”
He stepped toward me. “Emily, we can talk about the affair. Just don’t involve your mother.”
That sentence told me everything.
“You knew who she was?”
He said nothing.
My stomach dropped.
Victoria stayed on speaker. “Emily, listen carefully. Jason Harrison is the CFO of Harrison Property Group. Carter Capital has been financing two of their largest developments.”
Linda went pale.
Megan whispered, “Oh my God.”
Victoria continued. “Three weeks ago, our compliance team found irregular transfers from one of their project accounts. The money was routed through a consulting company that has no real employees.”
Jason snapped, “That has nothing to do with me.”
“Then why,” Victoria asked calmly, “does that company share an address with your brother’s office?”
Silence.
I looked at Jason. He had stopped pretending.
Then came the twist.
Victoria said, “The bigger problem is not the money. Someone has been preparing documents to blame Emily for it.”
My blood ran cold.
Jason’s face drained of color.
Megan stepped backward. “You said the paperwork was clean.”
Linda whipped around. “What paperwork?”
Nobody answered.
I remembered the strange envelopes Jason had asked me to sign last month. Insurance forms. Bank updates. A loan document he said was routine.
My hands started shaking.
“You used my signature?”
Jason lunged for my phone.
I stepped away.
Victoria’s voice sharpened. “Emily, leave the house now. My attorney is sending someone to you.”
Linda blocked the door. “You are not taking this family down over a marriage.”
I stared at her. “You slapped me because you wanted Megan in your son’s life.”
She glared at me.
Then Megan suddenly began crying.
“I didn’t know he was using your name,” she said.
Jason turned toward her. “Shut up.”
That was the moment I realized the affair was only part of the betrayal.
Megan wiped her tears and looked at me. “Jason told me you were leaving with nothing. He said everything was already arranged.”
Arranged.
The word hit me harder than Linda’s slap.
And someone in that room had just revealed more than they meant to.
The word “arranged” stayed in my head as I backed away from Jason.
Before anyone could stop me, the front door opened.
A woman in a navy suit entered with a man carrying a leather folder. Victoria’s attorney, Diane Miller, introduced herself and showed me identification.
“Emily, your mother asked us to get you out safely and preserve anything connected to the financial documents.”
Jason moved toward us.
