Trent folded his arms.
“You’re too late. There’s no video.”
Miriam looked at the shattered camera on the floor.
Then she looked at me.
“He destroyed that one?”
“Yes.”
She unlocked the tablet.
Trent’s face changed.
Miriam turned the screen toward the officers.
“Before anyone decides how Mrs. Vale got that injury,” she said, “you should watch what Mr. Trent Cole believed he erased.”
She pressed play.
Trent went completely still.
Part 2:
The video began with Trent forcing his way through my front door. No missing seconds. No convenient angle. The officers watched him threaten me, watched his fist move, then watched Rachel take my phone while he destroyed the camera.
“Turn that off,” Trent snapped.
Neither officer moved.
Miriam lowered her voice. “The camera uploads continuously to an off-site account. Breaking the hardware doesn’t erase the recording.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
But Miriam wasn’t finished.
She opened another file on the tablet.
“Eleanor, there’s something else. Trent wasn’t truthful about the money being locked in an investment account.”
His face drained.
“That’s private business.”
“Not anymore,” Miriam said. “Rachel’s bank contacted her after today’s transfer review. Nearly half a million dollars didn’t go where she thinks it went.”
Rachel slowly turned toward her husband.
“Where is my money?”
Miriam opened the transaction report.
