The hair on the back of my neck stood up. A terrifying, sickening realization began to crawl into my consciousness.
“Thomas,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “Look at me.”
He wouldn’t look up.
“Thomas. What did Wendy do to Fiona’s heart?”
A single tear rolled down the old man’s weathered, liver-spotted cheek. “When Fiona was six months old… Wendy started watching her on Thursday afternoons. Remember? She insisted on having ‘bonding time’ with her only granddaughter.”
“Yes,” I breathed, the blood roaring in my ears so loudly I could barely hear him. “She gave Fiona her afternoon bottles.”
“Wendy has a friend,” Thomas whispered, his voice cracking with shame. “A retired cardiologist. She got her hands on pediatric Propranolol. Beta-blocker drops.”
The diner around me seemed to vanish.
The sounds of clattering plates, the murmur of the highway, the distant laugh of my baby girl coloring with her aunt—everything faded into an abyss of absolute, paralyzing horror.
“She… she poisoned my baby?”
“Not enough to kill her,” Thomas sobbed quietly, hiding his face in his hands. “Wendy wanted to manipulate the trust covenants! Under the Sterling Trust, if an heir has a minor physical impairment, the estate cannot be disbursed directly to them upon reaching twenty-one—it remains under the permanent stewardship of the family matriarch! Wendy wanted permanent, total control of the fifty million dollars! She gave Fiona tiny micro-doses in her milk to induce artificial bradycardia and systolic murmurs during her pediatric exams!”
I stood up.
I didn’t realize I was standing until the metal table screeched against the floor.
Every instinct in my body, every maternal cell, screamed for violence. Wendy hadn’t just used my child as a spare parts catalog. She had systematically, deliberately poisoned an infant to ensure that fifty million dollars would never leave her iron grasp.
“Claire, sit down,” Marcus Shaw’s firm hand pressed down on my shoulder from the adjacent booth. “Sit down. Breathe.”
“She poisoned my baby, Marcus!” I hissed through clenched teeth, tears of unadulterated rage streaming down my face. “She poisoned Fiona!”
“And now she is going to federal prison for the rest of her natural life,” Marcus said, his eyes blazing with an intensity that matched my own. “Attempted murder of a minor. Aggravated child abuse. Healthcare fraud. Human trafficking. Deprivation of civil rights under color of law.”
Marcus looked at Thomas Vance.
“Mr. Vance. Are you prepared to sign a sworn deposition detailing every single word you just said to the United States Attorney?”
Thomas wiped his eyes. For the first time in what seemed like decades, the old man straightened his spine. He looked over at Fiona, who was currently giggling as Rachel drew a silly face in her coloring book.

Armed with Thomas Vance’s signed confession, Marcus and I didn’t go to the county sheriff. We knew Wendy had the local law enforcement apparatus wrapped around her diamond-ringed fingers.
Instead, we drove directly to the Federal Building in Newark,
straight into the office of Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Vance-Lin—no relation to Eric, but a prosecutor renowned for taking down corrupt family dynasties and pharmaceutical cartels.
By 2:00 PM, Dr. Miller, Fiona’s legitimate pediatrician, had been summoned to the federal building.
When Miller saw the Aegis biopsy report and heard Thomas’s testimony regarding the beta-blockers, he broke down in tears of professional horror. He immediately drew Fiona’s blood under strict federal chain-of-custody protocols to test for synthetic metabolites of Propranolol.
“If Wendy’s been dosing her,” Dr. Miller swore, his hands shaking with anger, “we will find the chemical footprint in her hair follicles. It takes months for beta-blockers to wash out of keratin. She won’t be able to deny it.”
By 4:00 PM, a federal magistrate had signed a sealed, multi-count indictment and a specialized search warrant for the Vance estate in Tuxedo Park:
*UNITED STATES OF AMERICA V. WENDY STERLING VANCE.*
Charges: Attempted Aggravated Murder of a Minor, Fraudulent Deprivation of Medical Consent, Unlawful Imprisonment, and Conspiracy to Commit Healthcare Battery.
“We execute at dusk,” Special Agent Martinez told us, strapping on his tactical vest in the briefing room. “We have thermal imaging of the carriage house. There is life support equipment drawing power in the basement. Julian Vance is down there.”
“I’m going with you,” I said.
“Mrs. Vance, that is out of the question,” Martinez countered immediately. “This is a tactical entry. It could turn volatile.”
