“Daniel, I don’t know what she’s planning. Maybe nothing. Maybe she was angry and said something she didn’t mean. But I know Vanessa, and I know how she behaves when she thinks someone is standing between her and what she wants.””
The recording ended with a burst of static.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa laughed once, sharply.
“That’s it? That’s what you’re going to destroy our marriage over? A recording of Emily complaining about a conversation we had?””
“Our marriage?”” I repeated.
She pressed her hands together.
“Daniel, your wife was jealous. She knew I had feelings for you, and she hated it. She made me promise I would never tell you how I felt because she thought it would ruin your friendship with me.””
“You just admitted the conversation happened.””
“Of course it happened! I cared about you. I still do. But that doesn’t mean I hurt Emily.””
I stared at her.
“Then explain the threat my daughter heard.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Lily is six. She misunderstands things.””
“She repeated your exact words.””
“Children repeat things they hear without understanding them.””
“Then why were you afraid of what she found?””
Vanessa looked toward the door again.
I followed her gaze.
A second later, the handle turned.
My best man, Marcus Reed, pushed the door open.
He wore a navy suit and a boutonniere that was already coming loose. His grin vanished when he saw Lily crying, the envelope on the floor, and Vanessa standing beside the dressing table with her makeup running down her face.
“What happened?”” Marcus asked.
“Get my daughter to the car,” I said.
Marcus looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“Please. Take Lily outside. Stay with her. Don’t let anyone take her anywhere.””
He crossed the room immediately.
“Come on, princess,” he said gently.
“Uncle Marcus has the emergency chocolate stash.””
Lily didn’t smile.
“Is Daddy coming?””
I kissed her forehead.
“Right behind you.””
She hesitated before reaching for Marcus.
Then, as he carried her through the doorway, she turned back.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Don’t let Aunt Vanessa take Mommy’s blue bag.””
The door closed.
I stared at it.
“What blue bag?””
Vanessa had gone completely white.
“What did Lily mean?””
“She’s confused.””
I took a step toward the dressing table.
Vanessa blocked me again.
“Daniel, you need to calm down.””
“Get away from me.””
“I’m trying to save you from something you don’t understand!””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at the clock.
Four minutes had passed since I first entered the room.
The ceremony was already late.
Outside, the wedding coordinator called my name.
Vanessa suddenly reached for my hand.
“Please,” she whispered.
“I know this looks terrible. But if you walk away now, you’ll never get the answers you want. The truth about Emily is more complicated than that recording.””
I pulled my hand free.
“Where is the blue bag?””
She swallowed.
“In my car.””
“Why?””
“Because I found it after the accident.””
The room became silent.
“You found Emily’s bag after the accident?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Someone had left it in the hospital waiting room. I took it home because I knew there were personal things inside. I thought I’d return it to you when you were ready.””
“You had eighteen months.””
“I was protecting you.””
“From your dead friend’s handbag?””
Her face tightened.
“From what was inside it.””
I held out my hand.
“Give me your keys.””
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
She took a step back.
“There’s something you need to understand about Emily. She wasn’t the woman you think she was.””
The words hit me with such force that I almost forgot to be angry.
Emily had been stubborn, funny, fiercely loyal, and occasionally impossible. She had burned dinner on our anniversary and once driven forty miles to return a library book because she couldn’t stand the thought of owing a stranger a late fee.
She had also been the mother who stayed awake beside Lily’s crib whenever our daughter had a fever.
She had been my best friend.
And Vanessa was standing in front of me, using her memory as a weapon.
“Don’t you dare,” I said.
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Emily had secrets, Daniel. Big ones. Secrets she never told you because she knew you would leave her if you found out.””
I wanted to strike back with a hundred angry words.
Instead, I asked one question.
“What was in the bag?””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she reached into the pocket of her wedding dress and pulled out a small brass key.
“I was going to give this to you after the ceremony.””
She placed it in my palm.
“It’s for the lockbox inside the bag. Emily made me promise never to open it unless something happened to her.””
I closed my fingers around the key.
“You opened it.””
