My father stared at his wife in utter shock, then slowly turned his terrifying gaze back toward me, stepping closer as Victoria held us both at gunpoint.
The blare of police sirens grew deafening outside the iron gates of the Malibu estate. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the standoff inside the living room. Victoria’s hands shook uncontrollably as she kept the revolver trained on my father’s chest. Her polished veneer was completely shattered. “You lied to me, Robert! You told me Maya’s mother left the beach house entirely to you in her will!”
My father took a slow, cautious step backward, his hands raised in surrender, but his eyes were dark with desperation. “Victoria, put the gun down. We can still handle this. If we get Maya into the panic room, we can force her to clear the stream—”
“Shut up!” Victoria screamed, tears running down her cheeks. “The FBI is outside! I listened to your phone calls last night! I know about the men in Miami! I know they gave you until midnight before they come to wipe out this entire house!”
I slowly pulled myself up from the tile floor, staying low and keeping my back against the heavy mahogany desk. My throat burned with every breath, but my mind was laser-focused. As the National Water Safety Director, I had undergone extensive emergency crisis management and tactical stress training. I knew that in a high-stress hostage situation, unpredictable panic was far more dangerous than a calculated threat.
“Victoria, listen to me,” I said softly, keeping my voice calm and steady. “The police outside aren’t just local patrol cars. The National Water Safety Board alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation the second my stream went live. The perimeter is already surrounded. If you pull that trigger, there is no way out for you.”
Victoria looked at me, her eyes filled with frantic hesitation. “You don’t understand, Maya… your father is a monster! He’s been draining your mother’s estate for years!”
“I know,” I replied quietly. “I’ve known for six years.”
My father whirled around to glare at me, his jaw clenching. “What are you talking about? You don’t know anything!”
“I know why you were so terrified of me taking ownership of the beach house, Dad,” I said, stepping forward slowly. “It was never just about the money. It was never about your failed crypto investments or your debts to Miami loan sharks.”
The room went dead silent. Even Victoria lowered the gun slightly, staring at me in confusion.
“Six years ago, when Mom suddenly passed away from a supposed heart attack at the beach house, the local coroner ruled it natural causes,” I explained, my voice trembling with suppressed rage and emotion. “You cremated her body within forty-eight hours before anyone could ask questions. But Mom wasn’t stupid. She knew you were stealing from her accounts. Two weeks before she died, she hid an encrypted drive inside the waterproof floor safe beneath the master bedroom jacuzzi in Malibu.”
My father’s face drained of every last remaining trace of color. He staggered back against the wall as if he had been struck by lightning.
“Two months ago,” I continued, “I finally found that drive. It contained audio recordings of you and Victoria discussing how to slowly poison her heart medication. You killed my mother to take her wealth. And when I filed for full legal transfer of the beach house deed last month, you realized I was going to enter that house, open the floor safe, and find the physical poison vials she had hidden away as proof.”
“You… you found them?” Robert whispered, his voice cracking.
“I gave those vials to federal prosecutors three days ago,” I revealed coldly. “Today wasn’t about me losing the beach house to you, Dad. Today was a sting operation. I knew you were desperate enough to try to eliminate me. I knew you would drag me to the water.”
Victoria gasped, dropping the revolver onto the rug with a dull thud. “You… you used yourself as bait?!”
Before my father could react, the glass patio doors exploded inward in a shower of brilliant sparks and shattering crystal. “FBI! HANDS IN THE AIR! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!” A dozen heavily armed SWAT officers poured into the living room, their tactical flashlights cutting through the dust and smoke. Red laser sights targeted my father and Victoria instantly.
My father tried to turn and bolt toward the back hallway, but two officers tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back and slamming the steel handcuffs onto his wrists. Victoria collapsed onto her knees, sobbing hysterical apologies as she was cuffed and hauled up by another agent.
