Chương 10

“Harold and Rick are claiming that the core algorithmic framework for the Aegis-Seven logistics software was not developed under your military command at Fort Meade, but was conceived, drafted, and tested through Monroe Logistics using private family capital. They are alleging that you stole proprietary code from their family company, utilized classified military servers to complete the software, and defrauded them out of the twenty-million-dollar defense acquisition payout.”

A muffled, ragged gasp tore from my throat, jarring against the metal wires in my mouth. The sheer audacity of the lie was suffocating. I had spent five years of my life—sleepless nights in desert command posts, endless weekends hunched over dual monitors in windowless basement labs at Meade, sacrificing my youth, my health, and my sanity—to build that predictive code from the ground up. Rick didn’t even know how to write a basic spreadsheet macro. Harold thought an algorithm was something you used to calculate brake-pad wear.

Yet here it was, laid out in formal federal legalese, wrapped in corporate registration numbers and notarized corporate seals.

*Can they freeze the project?* I wrote rapidly, my handwriting becoming frantic, jagged lines of black ink. *Can they stop the contract?*

Hail did not sugarcoat his response. “The Inspector General operates under strict administrative protocols, Claire. By regulation, whenever an intellectual property theft or procurement fraud allegation is formally filed by a corporate contractor against an active-duty project lead, an automatic administrative hold is triggered.”

He tapped the IG letterhead.

“As of eight o’clock this morning, the Department of the Army has temporarily suspended the twenty-million-dollar acquisition bonus. More critically, your security clearance has been placed in an interim suspended status pending an official review by the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency.”

I closed my eyes, my head spinning with nausea.

This was their game. This had always been their game.

They didn’t need to win a trial in court. They didn’t need to prove that Rick was an innocent victim or that Harold was an honest businessman. They only needed to create enough bureaucratic noise, enough institutional doubt, to grind my career to a screeching halt. In the high-stakes world of military cyber acquisition, a suspended clearance was the kiss of death. If Aegis-Seven was tied up in administrative litigation for even six months, the Pentagon would cancel the contract, re-bid the framework to an outside defense titan like Raytheon or Lockheed, and scrap my team’s five years of blood and sweat.

My father was willing to destroy my life’s work, my military career, and my freedom just to force me back to the bargaining table. He wanted me desperate. He wanted me isolated. He wanted me to call him and beg for mercy, offering up millions of dollars just to make the nightmare go away.

*What does Harold want?* I wrote on the board.

Hail opened a final, smaller folder and drew out a single sheet of watermarked bond paper.

“This was couriered to my office in D.C. less than two hours ago,” Hail said. “It’s a settlement offer from Harold’s legal counsel.”

He held it so I could read the crisp, laser-printed terms.

*In exchange for a full dismissal of all civil claims, the withdrawal of all federal criminal referrals regarding tax records, and the execution of a non-disclosure agreement by Master Sergeant Claire Monroe:*

*1. Monroe Logistics & Defense Consulting LLC will withdraw the intellectual property complaint filed with the Inspector General.*

*2. All assault charges filed against Richard Monroe in Fairfield County will be formally dismissed with prejudice.*

*3. Master Sergeant Claire Monroe will assign fifty percent of all current and future licensing royalties and defense contract bonuses associated with Project Aegis-Seven to Harold Monroe and Richard Monroe.*

*4. A voluntary conservatorship over Master Sergeant Monroe’s non-military personal estate will be established, designating Harold Monroe as co-conservator for a period of not less than twenty-four months.*

It was a complete, unconditional surrender.

If I signed that document, I would spend the rest of my life tethered to the men who had broken my face, stole my youth, and tried to erase my mind. I would be their private cash machine, legally trapped under their thumb, while Rick lived like a king on the spoils of my intellect.
