Ella sat beside a paramedic while statements were taken and watched Mark’s expression change from contempt to fear as his expensive friends moved farther away. For most of her life she had believed that exposing him would feel like victory, yet what she felt now was exhaustion mixed with a strange ache for the boy who once followed her through their mother’s vegetable garden.

Nora returned with the copied signature issue and told Ella that a name on a document could not settle the fate of a missing man. Then the lakeside team reported that the facility had power, recent food deliveries, and evidence of a room used well after its official closure, prompting emergency welfare checks within the scope of their lawful entry.

The team found signs that someone had been held there, including restraints, blankets, and a wall calendar marked with tally lines, but no person inside. An investigator recovered a medication packet from a waste bin with a pharmacy label dated just six days earlier, and the surname printed on it was Price.

For Ella, that discovery eclipsed everything that had happened to her in the backyard. Daniel might have been alive six days earlier, and his wife and daughter had spent nearly a year mourning a disappearance the people in her father’s orbit had apparently managed as though it were an inconvenient expense.

Before midnight, Nora located the origin of the anonymous voicemail through a records request and a cooperating witness. The caller was the lakeside property’s maintenance technician, Thomas Keene, who had fled after overhearing a discussion about moving Daniel to another location before the promotion reception.

Thomas agreed to a recorded interview only after learning he could consult independent counsel, and he gave investigators a street address near the state border. Nora looked at the address, then at the transportation invoices recovered from the office, and realized the moving company on the paperwork was not transporting equipment at all.
