Chapter 4: THE TWENTY-NINE-YEAR SECRET
Tom explained that twenty-nine years earlier, Patricia had been employed in the bookkeeping department of my father’s commercial construction business.
Over a period of fourteen months, roughly $780,000 had vanished from the company’s accounts.
The man accused of stealing that money was Samuel Salgado.
Patricia’s first husband.
And Marcus’s father.
Samuel had fled the state before prosecutors could formally charge him, leaving everyone convinced that he must have committed the theft.
But Dad had never been satisfied with that explanation.
“He found altered bank transfer records, authorization signatures that looked fraudulent, and invoices issued for work that had never actually been done,” Tom explained.
“Everything suggested Patricia was using Samuel’s administrative access to process the transactions herself.”
Tom then handed me the deed to sixteen acres of commercial real estate near the highway.
I recognized the property immediately.
When I was eighteen, my mother had sold that land to pay for my college education.
“Your mother didn’t actually lose the property forever,” Tom said softly. “Several years after she sold it, your father bought it back through a holding company.”
He turned another page.
“A solar energy company now leases the land. Its current estimated value is eight-point-two million dollars, and Elena Ortega is the sole beneficiary.”
Mom pressed both hands over her face.
“I thought that property was gone for good…”
Tom waited until she could collect herself.
Then he continued.
“There’s another matter you need to know about.”
He pointed toward the floor beneath our feet.
“Both sides of this duplex were built over an older underground storage structure. There’s a reinforced maintenance corridor running between the two basements.”
Patricia’s disturbing words echoed in my mind.
Your father promised that basement would stay sealed forever.
We made our way downstairs.
Behind a heavy metal storage rack, we discovered a reinforced security door.
Tom stepped toward the keypad.
But before he could enter the access code, a sharp electronic alert sounded.
A warning flashed across the display.
VAULT ACCESS INITIATED FROM ADJOINING UNIT.
PASSCODE VERIFIED.
Someone had just successfully unlocked the connecting corridor from the half of the duplex occupied by Marcus and Patricia.
Chapter 5: THE RECORDING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
We opened the reinforced door and stepped into the cold underground passage.
Fresh footprints were clearly visible in the dust covering the concrete floor.
From the far end of the corridor, we heard another door slam shut.
It sounded as though someone had just rushed away.
Tom reached for the switch and illuminated the overhead fluorescent lights.
The underground storage room contained several old filing cabinets, stacks of cardboard boxes, and collections of business paperwork.
At the center stood a table.
On it rested a small black metal security box.
Someone had recently tried to interfere with its locking mechanism. The evidence of tampering was plainly visible.
When we examined its contents, we found an old color photograph.
The picture showed my parents standing with Patricia and Samuel Salgado.
I recognized Samuel from family photographs I had seen years earlier.
On the back, my father had written a short message.
Samuel kept the original accounting records.
Lying beside the photograph was a VHS cassette.
Its handwritten label read:
PATRICIA – AUGUST 1997.
Tom opened his briefcase again and produced a portable video playback device.
He placed the cassette inside.
A grainy image appeared on the device’s small screen.
The first voice I heard belonged to my father.
Then Samuel began speaking.
“If anything happens, make sure Thomas gets the backup documents,” Samuel said on the recording.
A moment later, Patricia’s furious shouting could be heard from somewhere outside the camera’s view.
Samuel had apparently discovered suspicious transactions being approved with his supervisor’s stamp.
He had decided to take the records to an independent forensic accountant.
Patricia was demanding that he hand over the documents.
And then she shouted something that changed everything I thought I knew.
“If you walk out of here with those papers, Elena is going to find out who Marcus’s real biological father is!”
I spun around toward Mom.
Her eyes were squeezed tightly shut.
“You knew about this?” I asked her.
“Only part of it,” she replied in a barely audible voice.
Years before I was born, my parents had separated for four months.
During that painful period in their marriage, my father had become romantically involved with Patricia.
Several months afterward, Patricia announced that she was pregnant.
Marcus was born not long after that.
For years, she used the claim that Marcus was my father’s child to demand money, property, and business interests from him.
But eventually, Dad arranged a confidential DNA test.
The test proved that Marcus wasn’t biologically related to him.
Samuel Salgado was Marcus’s actual father.
“Then why did Samuel run away?” I asked Tom.
“Because Patricia had manipulated the financial records to make him look responsible,” Tom explained.
“Samuel believed he could face a lengthy federal prison sentence. He panicked and fled. Your father tried to locate him afterward, but Samuel vanished before they could recover the original documents.”
“Why didn’t Dad just go to the authorities and report Patricia?”
“He didn’t have all the necessary records,” Tom admitted.
“And he was terrified that exposing his former relationship with Patricia would permanently destroy his marriage to your mother.”
I didn’t know whether to feel furious or heartbroken.
My father had spent the remaining years of his life trying to put the evidence together.
He had not done it merely to cover up his own mistakes.
He had also wanted to make certain that Patricia would never again have the power to manipulate our family after he was gone.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated.
Marcus had sent me a photograph.
The image showed an old industrial warehouse.
On a wooden crate sat a battered leather briefcase.
His first message read:
“I found something.”
A second message followed immediately.
“Come meet me alone if you want to know the truth about my father.”
