“But right now, you need to recover. Noah needs you.”
I nodded.
He was right.
My baby was alive.
I had escaped that house.
Whatever Carter had planned, it had failed.
Or so I believed.
Because at that exact moment, something was happening downstairs that none of us could have imagined.
## THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
At 4:32 a.m., a young woman entered the hospital’s emergency department.
She wore a gray hoodie and jeans.
Her dark hair was tied into a messy ponytail.
She was shaking so badly that the receptionist asked whether she needed medical attention.
“No,” the woman whispered. “I need to speak with someone about Grace Hayes.”
The receptionist hesitated.
“Are you family?”
The woman shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
“Then I’m afraid—”
“Please.”
Her voice cracked.
“Tell her father that my name is Olivia Bennett.”
The receptionist looked confused.
The woman leaned forward.
“And tell him I know what Carter Hayes was planning.”
Hospital security was contacted.
Within minutes, Rebecca received another call.
She listened.
Then looked toward my father.
“Sir, there’s someone downstairs asking for you.”
“Who?”
“Olivia Bennett.”
My father frowned.
“Should I know that name?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“She’s listed as a former employee of Carter’s law firm.”
I stared at them.
Olivia Bennett.
The name meant nothing to me.
At least, not immediately.
Then I remembered.
Three months earlier, I had found a woman’s earring beneath the passenger seat of Carter’s car.
A small gold hoop with a green stone.
When I confronted him, he said it belonged to a colleague.
He had laughed at my jealousy.
“Her name is Olivia. She’s just a paralegal.”
I looked at Rebecca.
“Wait.”
She turned.
“Grace?”
“Olivia Bennett worked with Carter?”
“Yes.”
I felt cold.
“Then I know who she is.”
My father studied my face.
“Do you want us to speak with her?”
I nodded.
But before he could leave, Rebecca’s phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a photograph.
She opened it.
And went completely still.
“What’s wrong?” my father asked.
Rebecca turned the screen toward him.
I watched the color leave his face.
Then he looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with sadness.
But with an expression I had never seen before.
Pure disbelief.
“Grace,” he whispered, “there’s something you need to see.”
He held out the phone.
On the screen was a photograph of Olivia Bennett standing beside Carter outside a courthouse.
She was smiling.
Carter had one arm around her waist.
But that wasn’t what made my blood turn cold.
Olivia was holding a newborn baby.
A baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
And beneath the photograph was a message she had sent to Rebecca.
“Carter told me Grace would be dead before the baby was born. He promised we could finally be a family. But there’s something he doesn’t know about my son.”
I stared at the screen.
My hands began shaking.
My father looked at Rebecca.
“What does she mean?”
Rebecca’s phone rang again.
It was Olivia.
Rebecca answered on speaker.
“Ms. Bennett?”
A woman’s trembling voice filled the room.
“Is Grace alive?”
“Yes,” Rebecca said carefully.
Olivia began sobbing.
“Oh, thank God.”
My father stepped forward.
“Olivia, this is Thomas Whitmore. If you have information about a crime, you need to tell the police immediately.”
“I already called them,” she whispered. “They’re coming.”
“Then why are you contacting my daughter?”
“Because Carter lied to both of us.”
I gripped the blanket.
“Olivia?”
There was silence.
Then she whispered my name.
“Grace, I’m so sorry.”
My chest tightened.
“For what?”
“For believing him.”
I closed my eyes.
I didn’t want to hear another confession.
Not tonight.
Not after everything.
But Olivia continued.
“Carter told me you were cruel to him. He said you were divorcing him. He said the baby wasn’t his.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“That’s a lie.”
“I know.”
Her voice cracked.
“I found the documents.”
“What documents?”
“The ones he kept in the locked cabinet at his office.”
My father exchanged a glance with Rebecca.
Olivia inhaled sharply.
“Grace, Carter didn’t just want your inheritance.”
I felt my heartbeat in my throat.
“He wanted the land.”
“Why?”
“Because there’s something buried beneath it. Something worth more than the trust itself.”
My father went very still.
“What exactly are you talking about?”
Olivia hesitated.
Then she said five words that changed everything.
“The Whitmore family never knew.”
I stared at the phone.
Never knew what?
Before I could ask, a man’s voice sounded faintly in the background.
“Olivia?”
She gasped.
“Oh, God.”
Footsteps.
A door opening.
Then Carter’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Terrifyingly familiar.
“Olivia, sweetheart. Who are you talking to?”
The line went dead.
Rebecca immediately called hospital security and the police.
My father moved toward the door.
But I caught his sleeve.
