A thousand questions filled my head.
But I forced myself to stay calm.
“What was inside?””
“Boxes.””
“What kind of boxes?””
“Old ones.””
She looked toward the pool.
“And pictures.””
“Pictures of what?””
“I don’t know.””
Her voice cracked.
“But Julian saw me.””
My stomach dropped.
“What happened?””
“He grabbed my arm.””
I looked down at her wrist.
There were faint red marks.
My vision blurred with anger.
“He hurt you?””
“He didn’t hit me.””
She said it quickly.
Like she was defending him.
That scared me.
“He just squeezed too hard.””
I closed my eyes for a moment.
“Then what?””
“He took my phone.””
“Your phone?””
“He said I was making things worse.””
“Emily.””
I held her shoulders gently.
“Why didn’t you tell me from another phone?””
“Because he told Mom you were dangerous.””
My face changed.
“What?””
“He said you were angry and that you would try to take me away.””
A bitter laugh almost escaped me.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
After everything I had done to keep peace.
After every argument I swallowed.
Every accusation I ignored.
Julian had turned me into the villain.
And my daughter had been trapped between adults fighting a war she never started.
A sound came from the side of the house.
A door.
Emily immediately grabbed me.
“He’s back.””
I turned.
The back door was still closed.
But the sound had come from somewhere else.
The driveway.
My entire body reacted.
“Stay behind me.””
I moved slowly toward the corner of the house.
Then I saw it.
The gate.
Opening.
A shadow appeared.
Someone was walking toward us.
I reached for my phone.
No signal.
Of course.
I had no idea if it was Julian.
No idea if it was Elena.
No idea if we had seconds or minutes.
The footsteps got closer.
Emily buried her face against my side.
“Daddy.””
“I’m here.””
“Don’t let him take me back.””
The sentence nearly destroyed me.
“No one is taking you anywhere.””
The person stepped into view.
It wasn’t Julian.
It was Elena.
She stopped when she saw us.
Her eyes went from Emily.
To the broken cage.
To me.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“What did you do?””
I stared at her.
“What did I do?””
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“Mark, you need to leave.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My daughter was locked in a cage.””
Elena’s face changed.
A flash of pain.
Then fear.
“I know.””
The words stopped me.
“You know?””
She looked toward the pool.
Her voice dropped.
“Because Julian told me you would find her.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
Elena took one step closer.
“He knew you would come here.””
“Why?””
She looked at Emily.
And for the first time in years, I saw something in my ex-wife’s eyes that I had never seen before.
Regret.
“Because he needed you to see this.””
I stared at her.
“See what?””
Elena looked at the pool.
Then at the black bags floating beneath the surface.
And whispered:
“Because those bags aren’t the secret.””
A pause.
May you like
A terrible, silent pause.
“The secret is what’s underneath them.””
