On a sun-drenched weekend afternoon, I sat on the lawn chair in the front yard, watching Liam excitedly assemble a giant cardboard castle with Sienna—Brenda’s daughter. Brenda sat beside me, holding two glasses of cold juice. We had become close friends, sharing work and helping each other look after the children.

“Mom! Look at this!” Liam exclaimed, running over to show off a cardboard jewelry box he had meticulously decorated with glittering paper stars. “I reinforced it! It won’t get squashed this time!”

I took the small box from my son, a wave of happiness welling up inside me, leaving me momentarily speechless. My eleven-year-old boy had grown into someone resilient, talented, and deeply affectionate—so unlike his selfish father.

“It’s beautiful, Liam. This is the most precious thing I’ve ever owned,” I said, smiling brightly as I ruffled his hair.

Liam looked at me with innocent yet proud eyes: “From now on, I’ll walk home from school by myself and help you with the housework. I’m a big boy now; I’ll protect you.”

I held him close, breathing in the scent of morning sunshine in his hair. The tears shed over the pain, betrayal, and poverty of the past five years had vanished, giving way to a fierce belief in the future. We started over from the fragments—from an old watch found in a trash bag to a battered cardboard box. Yet, it was from those simple things that a new life, truly peaceful and filled with love, began.
