Something inside her said answer.
She did.
No one spoke.
Then a man breathed into the line.
Not Grant.
Older.
Weak.
“Evelyn?”
She recognized the voice.
Arthur Bennett.
“Arthur?”
“Don’t say my name.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Did you sign the Halstead resolutions?”
“Yes.”
Her heart sank.
“But not for Grant,” Arthur whispered.
“What does that mean?”
“Your father discovered two operations.”
Evelyn looked at Dana.
“What operations?”
“One was Grant.”
“And the other?”
Arthur began coughing.
When he spoke again, his voice was barely audible.
“The second one is why Thomas died.”
Every person in the room froze.
“Arthur, who?”
“I thought Grant was the predator.”
Pause.
“I was wrong.”
Evelyn gripped the phone.
“Who killed my father?”
A noise sounded behind Arthur.
A door.
Arthur inhaled sharply.
“Listen to me.”
“Arthur—”
“Grant didn’t disappear.”
Evelyn stood.
“What?”
“He went to warn you.”
The call cut.
For two seconds, no one moved.
Then every phone in the room buzzed at once.
An emergency alert from the private security company guarding Margaret’s condominium.
FRONT DESK BREACH.
Dana rushed to the window.
Detective Monroe drew her service weapon.
Margaret whispered, “Evelyn…”
The hallway elevator chimed.
Once.
Softly.
The doors outside opened.
Footsteps approached.
Not running.
Walking.
Slow.
Confident.
Then someone knocked three times.
Evelyn stared at the door.
A familiar voice came from the other side.
Grant.
“Evelyn.”
Detective Monroe raised her weapon.
Grant spoke again.
And for the first time since she had known him, there was no arrogance in his voice.
Only terror.
“Do not let Arthur Bennett inside.”
Evelyn’s blood went cold.
Because from the phone still clenched in her hand, a second voice suddenly whispered through the line.
Arthur.
“He’s already there.”
