“Daniel, you know I’m the one who’s been protecting this family.”

Something inside him broke.

He reached for the bottle.

His fingers closed around its neck.

The glass felt cold.

He straightened.

Marcus saw it immediately.

“Daniel!”

Daniel didn’t look at him.

“Put it down.”

He took one step toward Lauren.

Her face changed.

She looked at the bottle.

“Daniel?”

He kept walking.

“Don’t come near me.”

Her voice trembled.

He barely heard it.

He could hear his mother’s cry.

He could hear the impact.

He could hear Grace screaming.

He wanted the memories to stop.

He wanted Lauren to understand what she’d done.

But no words seemed large enough.

Marcus moved toward him.

“Dan, listen to me.”

Daniel’s breathing became harsh.

Lauren backed away.

“Please.”

He saw her hands rise.

He saw fear enter her face.

For one second, he hesitated.

Then he remembered Evelyn falling.

The hesitation vanished.

“Daniel, no!”

Marcus shouted.

Daniel swung.

The bottle struck Lauren high along her shoulder and the side of her head.

The impact made a dull, terrible sound.

Lauren jerked sideways.

Her long hair whipped across her face.

She stumbled backward.

Her heel caught against the uneven garden border.

She reached for the tablecloth.

The fabric slipped through her fingers.

Then she fell onto the grass.

The bottle flew from Daniel’s hand.

It rolled beneath the table with a hollow clatter.

Someone screamed.

A chair toppled.

Then everything seemed to stop.

Daniel stood motionless.

His chest rose and fell.

Lauren lay curled on the ground.

Her white dress had twisted around her legs.

She moved one arm toward her shoulder.

Evelyn remained beside the overturned chair.

Melissa was still kneeling near her.

Grace stood behind Marcus.

The little girl stared at her father.

Daniel looked down at his empty hand.

His fingers remained curled as though the bottle were still there.

He had done it.

He had attacked Lauren.

In front of his daughter.

In front of everyone.

He had seen what anger could do.

Then he’d allowed it to decide for him.

Marcus reached his side.

“Dan.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

His friend touched his shoulder.

“Step back.”

Daniel obeyed automatically.

He looked toward Lauren.

A guest approached her cautiously.

Another called for medical assistance.

Daniel heard someone mention the police.

He didn’t feel afraid.

Not yet.

He felt empty.

He looked toward Grace.

Her eyes were full of tears.

She wasn’t running toward him.

She stood perfectly still.

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

“Grace?”

The girl shook her head.

He stopped.

He had wanted to protect her.

Instead, she’d watched him become part of the violence.

He looked at Marcus.

His friend appeared deeply shaken.

“Dan,” Marcus whispered, “what have you done?”

Daniel opened his mouth.

No words came.

He looked toward Evelyn.

Her face was partly hidden by Melissa’s shoulder.

He wanted to kneel beside her.

He wanted to apologize.

He wanted to promise she’d never be hurt again.

But he had just broken another promise.

The note remained crushed in his fist.

He hadn’t realized he was still holding it.

His fingers slowly opened.

The paper slipped free.

A faint breeze caught one corner.

It landed near his shoe.

Daniel stared at it.

Grace’s handwriting faced upward.

He saw the words he’d already read.

The bruises.

Lauren.

Melissa.

The blue tin.

Then he noticed a narrow strip of writing beneath the final fold.

He hadn’t unfolded the entire page.

A few small letters appeared near the bottom.

Daniel bent down.

His knees felt weak.

He picked up the note.

The paper trembled between his fingers.

He carefully opened the last crease.

There was another sentence.

The pencil marks were lighter than the others.

Grace must have written it with a tired hand.

Daniel brought the paper closer.

His heart began pounding for a different reason.

Something about the first word frightened him.

It was the name his daughter used whenever she needed him.

Daddy.

He stared at the remaining words.

Then he began to read.
