Just last week, I appeared in family court representing a young woman named Maria, whose husband had retained a prominent firm to take custody of their two young children. Maria sat shaking at our table, staring across the room at three intimidating litigators.
From the back row, someone let out a dismissive little laugh.
Maria shrank back in her seat, looking terrified and alone.
I recognized that mocking sound immediately, knowing exactly how heavy it felt.
I placed my briefcase on the table, sat down beside her, and gently placed my hand over her trembling fingers.
“Keep your eyes on me, Maria,” I whispered with confidence. “Do not worry about anyone else in this room.”
She looked into my face with tearful eyes.
“They think you have no way to defend yourself,” I told her softly. “They think you are completely alone, but they are wrong about that.”
“How are they wrong?” she asked in a whisper.
I smiled, stood up tall, and opened my legal folder before the court.
“Because you are not standing alone anymore.”
The room grew quiet as the judge entered.
This time, the silence was not the heavy quiet of someone being pushed down, but the steady calm of someone rising to meet the challenge.
I learned that true dignity is never something granted by others, nor is it something anyone can take away from you. Real loyalty never asks you to hide your own strength, and genuine love will never require you to become small just so someone else can feel powerful.
THE END.
