“You won’t be going anywhere tonight, Emily. But you can help us by telling us everything you remember.””
I nodded.
Laura placed the brass key in an evidence envelope.
As Officer Daniels prepared to leave with Detective Harris, a nurse appeared at the door.
“Detective? Mr. Walls is asking to see his daughter.””
Laura stood immediately.
“No.””
The nurse looked startled.
“He says it’s urgent.””
“Tell him Emily isn’t ready.””
Before the nurse could leave, I spoke.
“Wait.””
Laura turned toward me.
I took a shaky breath.
“I want to see him.””
“Are you sure?””
“No,” I admitted.
“But I want to ask him one question.””
The nurse left to bring Richard.
A few minutes later, he entered the room alone.
He looked at the IV in my hand, the bruises on my cheek, and the blankets wrapped around my shoulders.
His face crumpled.
“Emily.””
I looked at him without speaking.
He stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out so quietly that I almost didn’t hear them.
For one moment, I wanted to forgive him simply because he was my father and I was exhausted.
But then I remembered the deadbolt.
I remembered the rain.
I remembered calling for help with a mouth that couldn’t form the word.
“What did you know about my mother’s death?”” I asked.
Richard stopped.
Laura’s expression hardened.
“Emily,” he whispered, “this isn’t the time.””
“Then when is it?””
He looked toward Detective Harris, who had returned to the doorway.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
“But everything I did was to protect this family.””
I stared at him.
“Did Mom know about the missing money?””
Richard’s face went white.
Laura stepped forward.
“Answer her.””
He looked at me, then at the envelope containing the brass key.
Finally, he whispered, “I never meant for her to find out.””
The room went silent.
It wasn’t a confession to murder.
It wasn’t an explanation.

But it was the first honest sentence my father had spoken all night.
And it opened a door that none of us could close again.
