It sits in Laura’s study.

Apparently she tells visitors Maggie restored it.

Mom corrects her whenever she hears that.

“We restored it.”

Laura accepts the correction.

That might be my favorite part.

Because two years ago, Laura believed education was something one person possessed and another lacked.

Now she understands learning works best when both people arrive believing the other might know something they do not.

The last time our families had dinner together, Laura brought coffee to the table.

She handed one cup to my mother.

“Cream.”

Mom took a sip.

“Perfect.”

Laura smiled.

No humiliation.

No grand speech.

Just coffee.

Nathan looked at me.

I knew he remembered.

So did I.

Mom probably did too.

Nobody said anything.

We did not need to.

Some lessons deserve lectures.

Others only need a second cup made correctly.
