The floor rushed up to meet me, but strong arms caught me before my knees hit the tile.

My mother cradled my shoulders, her posture shifting from hardened commanding officer to terrified mother in the span of a single heartbeat.

“Medic!” she barked, her voice cutting through the ringing in my ears.

Two combat medics entered through the open front door, a collapsible stretcher gliding seamlessly behind them.

I felt warm, sticky moisture pooling beneath the hem of my dress, soaking into the fabric against my thighs.

“She’s hemorrhaging,” one of the medics said with clinical urgency, pressing a sterile gauze pack against my side.

“Placental abruption likely due to blunt abdominal trauma.”

The kitchen blurred into a dizzying streak of fluorescent lights and muted chaos.

Diane was screaming somewhere in the background, her shrieks rising in shrill desperation as an MP took her by the elbows.

“You can’t arrest me in my own son’s house!” she wailed.

“Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who my family is?”

“Ma’am, you are being detained as an accomplice to felony domestic violence and assault on an expectant mother,” an officer responded calmly, wrenching her wrists behind her back with unyielding force.
