The first agent lifted a badge.
“Arthur Vance?”
The whole room froze.
My husband slowly turned toward me.
For the first time that afternoon, Julian looked afraid.
May you like
I pushed myself up from the floor, one hand on my belly.
And I whispered, “Right on time.”
Chapter 2
The ballroom stayed silent for one long second.
Then everything exploded.
Arthur’s champagne glass slipped from his hand and shattered across the floor.
Elise stood so fast her chair fell backward.
Julian grabbed my arm again, but this time his fingers shook.
“What did you do?” he hissed.
I pulled away.
“I told the truth.”
An agent stepped forward.
“Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.”
Arthur backed up.
“This is a mistake.”
“No,” I said quietly. “It isn’t.”
Every head turned toward me.
The relatives who had clapped while I lay on the floor now stared as if I had become someone else.
Maybe I had.
Maybe the woman who wanted their approval had died somewhere between the shove and the applause.
Arthur pointed at me.
“She’s unstable. She’s pregnant and emotional.”
Agent Harris, the woman leading the team, looked at me.
“Mrs. Vance provided documents, recordings, and verified account trails over the last four months.”
Julian’s mouth opened.
Elise whispered, “Claire?”
I met her eyes.
“You should have helped me up.”
Her face twisted.
“You ungrateful little snake.”
Mia rushed to my side and held my elbow.
“Are you hurt?”
“My side,” I whispered. “And my wrist.”
Her eyes filled with fury.
“You need a hospital.”
Julian heard that and stepped back.
“I didn’t hurt her.”
Everyone looked at the broken table behind me.
The gifts on the floor.
The shattered vase.
The spilled lemonade soaking into the white carpet.
Chloe stood near the doorway, one hand on her stomach, her perfect smile gone.
“I didn’t know,” she said suddenly.
Julian turned on her.
“Be quiet.”
Agent Harris looked at him.
“Julian Vance?”
His face drained.
“Yes?”
“You are named in several documents as an authorized signer on three fraudulent vendor accounts.”
“That was my father’s business.”
Arthur shouted, “Don’t say anything!”
Two agents moved toward Julian.
He raised both hands.
“I didn’t know what I was signing.”
I almost laughed.
Because I remembered every night he came home bragging.
Every dinner where he mocked me for asking questions.
Every time he said, “This family knows how to win.”
Now winning looked like panic.
Elise tried to reach Arthur, but an agent blocked her.
“You can’t do this,” she cried. “We know senators. We know judges.”
Agent Harris didn’t blink.
“Then they may need attorneys too.”
That shut her mouth.
Mia helped me into a chair.
My hands trembled as I touched my belly again.
The baby moved.
I closed my eyes.
Thank God.
Julian saw the gesture and took one step toward me.
“Claire, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what you’ve done.”
“I understand perfectly.”
His voice dropped.
“We’re married. If I go down, you go down.”
I looked at Agent Harris.
She nodded once.
“You were granted cooperating witness protection after our review. Your involvement was documented as evidence gathering after discovery.”
Julian stared.
“You planned this?”
“For months.”
His expression changed from fear to rage.
“You were sleeping beside me while betraying me?”
I stood slowly.
“No, Julian. I was sleeping beside a man who betrayed me first.”
The words landed hard.
Even Chloe flinched.
Arthur was being cuffed now.
He fought at first, then stopped when cameras appeared at the ballroom entrance.
News crews.
Someone had tipped them off.
Not me.
Maybe the FBI.
Maybe one of Arthur’s enemies.
Maybe justice had its own appetite.
Elise screamed when the cameras flashed.
“Cover your face, Arthur!”
But Arthur Vance had built his life on being seen.
Now the whole city would see him fall.
Julian lunged toward me.
“You ruined us!”
Before he reached me, two agents grabbed him.
Mia stepped in front of my chair like a shield.
“Touch her again and I’ll testify too.”
Julian’s eyes burned into mine.
“You think you’re safe?”
Agent Harris turned sharply.
“Was that a threat?”
He shut his mouth.
Chloe started crying.
“I want to leave.”
Elise spun toward her.
“You brought this curse into our family.”
Chloe recoiled.
I watched them turn on each other with stunning speed.
No loyalty.
No love.
Only survival.
The same thing they had given me for years.
Nothing.
Paramedics arrived minutes later.
One checked my blood pressure while another examined my wrist.
“Any contractions?” he asked.
“No. Just pain on my side.”
“We need to take you in.”
I nodded.
Julian heard and struggled against the agents.
“That’s my child.”
I looked at him.
“No. This is my daughter.”
His face went blank.
“Daughter?”
Elise gasped.
“You told us it was a boy.”
I almost smiled.
“I never told you anything. You assumed.”
Arthur’s head snapped toward Julian.
“You said she was carrying a son.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“I thought she was.”
And there it was.
