Two years later, Vanessa worked as an assistant at the bank handling the company’s loans. She discovered Ethan’s ownership documents and approached him with an offer: if Ethan secretly transferred his shares to her, she would help conceal several unauthorized loans my father had obtained using false financial statements.
Ethan refused.
Vanessa then began dating my father.
“She didn’t marry him because she loved him,” I whispered.
Detective Ruiz nodded. “We believe she married him to gain access to the company records and pressure your husband through your family.”
The original loan mentioned in her message was the first fraudulent loan my father had signed. Vanessa had approved it using another employee’s credentials. Ethan discovered it shortly before his diagnosis became terminal, but he needed proof connecting both of them.
So he pretended not to know.
Over several months, he quietly collected emails, bank logs, recordings, and copies of altered documents. He placed them in the safe at our house. After his death, my father stole Ethan’s phone and removed the evidence folder—but he didn’t know Ethan had automatically backed everything up to his attorney’s encrypted server.
“Why didn’t Ethan tell me?” I asked.
Maya’s eyes filled with sadness. “Because you were pregnant, grieving, and caring for him. He wanted you protected, not terrified.”
She handed me a letter written in Ethan’s familiar handwriting.
Claire, I know your father will come for the house when I’m gone. He believes grief will make you easy to control. Let him reveal himself. The trust will protect you and Hope, but only you can decide whether to forgive him. Please remember that protecting yourself is not betrayal.
I pressed the letter against my chest and cried for the first time since the funeral.
The next morning, my father called from the county jail.
He had been arrested for forgery, attempted grand theft, loan fraud, and assault. Vanessa faced the same financial charges, along with conspiracy and unlawful access to bank records.
“Please answer,” Dad said when I accepted the call. His voice sounded smaller than I had ever heard it. “Vanessa manipulated me.”
“You dragged your pregnant daughter by her hair.”
“I was angry. I thought the house belonged to me.”
“You knew the deed was forged.”
Silence.
Then he whispered, “If you cooperate with the investigators, they’ll destroy the company.”
“The company was built with Ethan’s money.”
“I’m still your father.”
“And I’m still your daughter. That didn’t stop you.”
He began crying, but I ended the call.
