The room grew quiet as she stood up. The microphone squealed slightly with feedback. She didn’t hold a piece of paper. She didn’t have notes. Her hands were gripping the edge of the sweetheart table so tightly that her knuckles were entirely white.
“Elena and I have known each other for fifteen years,” Sarah began. Her voice was too loud, echoing harshly off the stone walls of the ballroom. She wasn’t looking at the crowd. She was staring directly at Mark.
“We grew up with nothing,” she continued, her voice trembling, escalating in pitch. “We made a pact that we would never let anything come between us. That we would always protect each other. But the funny thing about promises… is that they are so easily bought. Aren’t they, Mark?”
The entire room froze. The silence was instantaneous and absolute.
I felt all the blood drain from my face. “Sarah,” I whispered, reaching out to touch her arm. “Sarah, sit down.”
