There won’t be a second time.’”
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Dad made me promise.”
Anger rose in my chest.
“Everybody kept protecting everybody.”
Rebecca began crying.
“I thought it was over.”
“So did your father.”
The police found Ashley the next day.
She’d checked into a hotel under her maiden name.
According to the information later reviewed by the investigators, her vehicle contained copies of my property records, another blue folder, and documents connected to Langford Capital.
There was also paperwork relating to Maya.
At first, we were told it included her birth certificate.
That frightened me.
Why would Ashley need documents about her grown daughter during a scheme involving my house?
Later, Thomas received additional information through the legal process.
He asked Maya and me to come to his office.
On his desk were copies of laboratory reports apparently discovered among the materials.
One concerned a DNA relationship comparison.
Maya sat beside me.
I felt her hand find mine.
The report was six years old.
It listed Maya Mercer and Franklin Mercer.
According to the reported result, the tested relationship was excluded.
I stared at the page.
“I don’t understand.”
Thomas carefully explained that, if the report was authentic and the samples correctly identified, it indicated Frank wasn’t Maya’s biological grandfather.
That possibility raised questions we hadn’t been prepared to confront.
Then he showed us another page.
A comparison involving Maya and Daniel.
The reported parent-child result was an exclusion.
Maya stared at it.
Then at me.
“Grandma?”
I reached for her hand.
She pulled the report closer.
“Does this mean Dad isn’t my biological father?”
“We need independent confirmation before treating an old report as conclusive,”
Thomas said.
But Maya could already see what the document claimed.
Her face went pale.
For the first time since Daniel attacked me, the fear in our family had nothing to do with property.
Maya whispered, “Then who am I?”
I put my arm around her.
“You’re Maya.”
She began crying.
I held her as tightly as I could.
Whoever her biological father was, nothing could change the twenty-seven years we’d loved her.
But I knew she deserved the truth.
And I feared Daniel had been hiding that truth for a very long time.
Chapter 5: THE HOUSE WAS NEVER THE REAL TARGET
Daniel asked to see me.
I refused.
Then he sent a message through Thomas.
Please ask Mom to bring Maya.
That changed things.
Maya wanted answers.
The county arranged a meeting at the detention facility.
Daniel looked much older than when I’d last seen him.
The moment Maya entered, he began crying.
She remained still.
Then she placed the DNA report on the table.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked down.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get it?”
“Mom had it.”
He closed his eyes.
“Of course she did.”
Maya’s voice shook.
“Are you my biological father?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m your father.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
His face crumpled.
“No.”
The word was barely audible.
Maya stared at him.
“Who is?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“A man named Scott Langford.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Langford.
The same name as the company connected to Daniel’s debt.
Daniel explained that Maya’s mother, Laura, had been involved with Scott during a difficult period in her relationship with Daniel.
Laura and Daniel eventually reconciled.
Daniel raised Maya as his daughter.
Laura died when Maya was four.
Years later, Daniel married Ashley.
Maya looked at him.
“When did Ashley learn the truth?”
“Six years ago.”
“Is that why she had the test?”
Daniel nodded.
“She found letters Laura had kept.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“She tested me without telling me?”
“Yes.”
I asked about Scott Langford.
Daniel said Scott had no acknowledged children and had become concerned about his health and estate.
He’d asked questions about Maya.
Ashley discovered the connection and believed it might provide an opportunity.
“She told Scott she could arrange contact,” Daniel said.
Maya stared.
“Arrange contact with me?”
“Yes.”
“Without asking me?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“She said she could help.”
I leaned forward.
“And the loan?”
He admitted that Ashley had helped arrange financing from Langford Capital while his construction company was struggling.
The money came with conditions and expectations he couldn’t meet.
Maya looked at him.
“You took money while keeping the truth about me secret.”
“I thought I could repay it.”
“You always say that.”
Daniel began crying.
I asked why he’d involved my house.
“When the company failed, Langford demanded repayment.
Ashley said the house could secure another arrangement.”
“And if I refused?”
Daniel looked down.
“She said there were legal ways to put someone else in charge of your finances.”
“The guardianship papers.”
He nodded.
I stared at him.
“You put your hand around my throat.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
“You don’t get to describe yourself as someone who was simply following Ashley’s plan.”
He nodded.
“You’re right.”
Maya asked why Ashley had threatened to deal with her too.
Daniel claimed that Ashley thought Maya might already suspect the connection to Langford Capital.
She’d seen Maya asking questions about an email mentioning the company.
He said he didn’t know what Ashley intended.
I couldn’t tell whether that was true.
But what I knew was enough.
My son had helped create a situation where both his mother and daughter were being treated as obstacles to financial plans they hadn’t agreed to.
The investigation continued.
The kitchen recording was central evidence of the assault and contradicted Daniel’s claim that I’d been the aggressor.
The questionable guardianship paperwork and the signature attributed to a deceased attorney required separate review.
Questions also arose concerning Langford Capital’s transactions.
Scott Langford denied any involvement in forged documents or plans to force Maya into contact.
Ashley had apparently given different explanations to different people.
Daniel believed Scott might use Maya against him.
Scott believed Ashley could arrange a family introduction.
I had been told the house needed refinancing.
Relatives had been told I was becoming confused.
The stories were incompatible.
And many of them traced back to Ashley.
Three weeks later, Scott requested a meeting with Maya.
She refused.
Then he sent a letter.
She left it unopened for two days before reading it at my kitchen table.
I sat nearby.
Scott wrote that Laura had once told him Maya was Daniel’s child and that she didn’t want him involved.
Years later, Ashley contacted him with information suggesting otherwise.
He acknowledged providing financial assistance to Daniel through his company, but denied authorizing any attempt to force Maya into a relationship or take my property.
At the end, he wrote:
If you never want to meet me, I will respect that.
But there is something you should know.
