“If anyone tells you that one sister is more deserving than the other, stop and look at who benefits from that belief.”
I read it twice.
My parents had understood us better than we understood ourselves. They knew jealousy, pressure, and fear could make family members turn against each other. So they left us protection as well as property.
That sentence became the one I remembered whenever doubt returned.
As for David, he never came back.
I never asked him to.
That night, when he told me not to return until I had taken the apartments away from my sister, I thought he was sending me away with nothing.
He was wrong.
I returned to that motel with one suitcase and nowhere else to go.
I stayed because I had nowhere else.
I remained because, for the first time, the property was mine to understand.
And I left months later with something far more valuable than an inheritance.
I had my independence.
My sister had the truth.
And I finally understood that my worth was never determined by which property my parents left me.
