“Sweetheart, did something happen? The mortgage payment didn’t go through. The bank sent an alert. I’m sure it’s a mistake. Call me.”
Sweetheart.
The word she used when she wanted something.
“I’m sure it’s a mistake” was a test. She was giving me a chance to fix it. To apologize. To return to the pattern.
I did not move.
The next message was from my father.
“You forgot the house transfer.”
That was all.
No greeting. No please.
Just a command disguised as a reminder.
You forgot.
As if I were a child who had forgotten to take out the trash.
The entitlement of it made me feel sick.
He was not worried.
He was annoyed.
Then came Brooke.
“Rent’s due. Can you Venmo me? Landlord is being awful.”
She did not even know yet.
Or maybe she did and did not care.
It was the first of the month.
Time to text Izzy.
I put the phone down. I went to the kitchen. I made coffee. I watched water drip through the filter while my phone started ringing.
Mom.
I let it ring.
Dad.
I let it ring.
Brooke.
I silenced it.
I took a shower and let hot water run over my back.
“You are thirty-two years old,” I told myself. “You are not a child. You did nothing wrong.”
My heart still pounded.
I dressed for work in a gray blazer and put on mascara. In the mirror, I looked pale. Like a ghost trying to pass as a professional woman.
Before I left, I checked my phone.
It was a wall of notifications.
From Mom: “Isabella, this isn’t funny. You need to call the bank. What if we lose the house?”
Then: “Are you angry about what Brooke said? She was just joking. You’re being too sensitive.”
From Dad: “I am not playing this game. You have one hour to fix this.”
From Brooke: “Izzy hello??? I need the money.”
Then: “Why are you ignoring me?”
I turned the sound off, put the phone in my bag, and went to work.
At my desk, I opened a report and stared at words that made no sense. My phone was on Do Not Disturb, but the screen kept lighting up at the edge of my vision. Every thirty seconds. Texts. Missed calls. Voicemails.
I put it in my drawer.
At lunch, I did not eat. I went for a walk through damp downtown streets and tried to breathe.
By afternoon, the tone had changed.
Morning had been confusion.
Afternoon was panic.
By evening, it would become anger.
I had ten missed calls from Mom, eight from Dad, twelve from Brooke, and several voicemails.
I put in my earbuds and pressed play.
My mother’s voice came first, high and wet.
“Isabella, how could you? Your father is a mess. You are hurting us. You are hurting your mother. Is that what you want? You are being cruel.”
I deleted it.
My father’s voice was next, low and hard.
“You pick up this phone. You pick it up right now. I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but this little stunt is over. You are going to call us. You are going to apologize. And you are going to send the money. This is not a request. This is your family.”
I deleted it.
Brooke’s voice came last.
“Izzy, I’m serious. My landlord is texting me. What am I supposed to tell him? You can’t just do this. You’re ruining my life.”
I deleted it.
Then I looked at the texts.
From Dad: “You ungrateful child. After all we’ve done for you. We raised you. We fed you. You owe us.”
From Mom: “You have a good job because of us. We supported your dreams.”
From Brooke: “I hope you’re happy. I’m going to lose my apartment because of you.”
I stared at the words.
You owe us.
After all we’ve done for you.
What had they done?
They had done the basic job of parents. Fed me. Housed me. Raised me until I was eighteen. And somehow that had become a bill I was expected to pay for the rest of my life.
We supported your dreams.
My dream had been college. I got scholarships. I took loans. Loans I was still paying. They did not pay a dime.
They had not supported my dream.
They had simply not stood in its way.
I replied to nothing.
Silence became my only weapon.
That night, I made a simple dinner and watched a show I could barely follow. My phone kept lighting up like a dying star. I took screenshots of the worst messages. Then I opened a folder on my computer where I kept the receipts and created a new subfolder.
I named it The Fallout.
