Victor fell beside Nolan.
It wasn’t graceful.
Serafina stumbled to one knee herself, and pain shot through her wrist as she caught her weight against the ground.
But she got back to her feet before either man could rise.
The entire lawn went silent.
For years, Victor had treated her as though she existed only to correct paperwork and sign checks.
Now he was lying in the grass outside her home, staring upward at the woman he had spent so long dismissing.
His face darkened.
“You’re finished,” he snarled.
Serafina flexed her aching hand.
“Get off my property.”
Victor pushed himself upright.
“Boys!”
Several men standing near the driveway immediately began moving toward her.
They weren’t ordinary employees.
Serafina recognized them as men connected to the older organization, people Victor had gathered because he believed their presence would frighten her into obedience.
Some were accustomed to following whichever Russo spoke the loudest.
Others simply looked uncertain about what they had witnessed.
But before any of them reached Serafina, another group moved forward from the vehicles arriving behind them.
Enzo Moretti stepped onto the lawn.
Beside him were Dominic Caruso, Salvatore Bellini, and Raymond DeLuca.
The four capos.
Men who had spent decades operating within the family, men whose decisions carried far more weight than Victor wanted to acknowledge.
They didn’t reach for Serafina.
They didn’t threaten her.
One after another, they walked past Victor and Nolan.
Then, without exchanging a word, every capo stepped behind Serafina.
Victor stared at them.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed unable to find anything to say.
Nolan slowly got to his feet.
His earlier confidence had disappeared.
He looked from Enzo to Dominic, then toward the other men who were now standing quietly behind Daniel’s widow.
Something in their posture frightened him more than the fall had.
“Why?”
Nolan demanded.
“Why are they protecting you?”
No one answered immediately.
Then Enzo lowered his head.
Dominic followed.
So did Salvatore and Raymond.
Four of the most influential men in the organization were bowing respectfully to the woman Victor had spent years calling nothing more than a bookkeeper.
Nolan took an involuntary step backward.
Serafina didn’t move.
Her breathing had become steady again, although her wrist throbbed and her heart was still racing from the sight of Leo beneath Nolan’s weight.
She looked directly into the face of the man who had hurt her little boy.
Nolan swallowed.
“Who are you?”
Serafina thought of Daniel.
She thought of every warning she’d ignored, every humiliation she’d swallowed, and every night she’d spent convincing herself that keeping peace was the same thing as keeping her children safe.
Then she remembered Leo crying into the grass.
“Someone who’s about to die doesn’t need to know the truth.”
Nolan’s face went pale.
Victor looked toward the four men behind her.
None of them smiled.
And for the first time in his life, Nolan Russo understood that the people he’d always believed would protect him might be the very people who had finally decided he needed to answer for what he’d done.
The story isn’t over yet.
