At five, the obstetrician said the latest monitoring was reassuring. I could go home after one more check, but I would need follow-up care and strict instructions to return if anything changed. I placed my palm against my stomach. My daughter kicked it, hard enough to make me laugh and cry at once.
Just before sunset, Elena called again. Investigators had located Ryan outside his attorney’s office and arrested him on a warrant tied to the forged filings and attempted loan. Vanessa remained in custody on the assault charge. The charges were allegations for the courts to decide, Elena reminded me; neither arrest would undo what happened that morning.
“What about the company?” I asked.
“The temporary order protects it,” she said. “The trust documents show your mother placed it in your name. We still have hearings ahead, but Ryan can’t borrow against it or run it.”
My mother had taught me to read every invoice before approving it. I wished I’d listened when it came to my own life. Still, she had made one decision that Ryan could not rewrite: Mercer Supply belonged to me under her trust.
Weeks later, the court confirmed the original records and rejected Ryan’s ownership claim. The bank closed the fraudulent loan request. My lawyer handled the divorce while I focused on my pregnancy. Helen returned to work, and I met the employees Ryan had treated like figures on a balance sheet. I told them the company was secure and that any major decisions would come through me.
Dad came to that meeting as my father, sitting quietly in the back. He had stepped away from every matter involving Ryan. Afterward, he asked if I wanted him beside me for the next appointment.
“Yes,” I said. “But let me do the talking.”
Months later, I held my healthy daughter in my arms and signed my first company decision as its owner. It was an ordinary approval for new equipment. I paused over the signature line, thinking of the hand Ryan had tried to imitate.
Then I wrote my name myself.
