“You knew,” Ethan said, his voice chillingly calm. “Every time you told me I was unworthy of the Vance name, every time you reminded me that you ‘saved’ me from a gutter, you knew you bought me for five hundred thousand dollars stolen from my grandfather’s vault.”
“It wasn’t like that!” Patricia cried out, her eyes darting frantically toward Finch for support, but her lawyer was already frantically reviewing the legal filings Sterling had thrust into his hands. “We did it to protect you! She was an unstable, lower-class girl trying to entrap Richard! Arthur handled it! I took you in out of the kindness of my heart!”
“The kindness of your heart?” I stepped forward, unable to remain silent. “You charged the trust twenty thousand dollars a month for his ‘upkeep’ until he graduated college,
Patricia! We found the ledger! You billed your own dead husband’s estate for Ethan’s winter coats while you bought yourself sports cars and summer homes in Naples!”
“You stay out of this, you little nobody!” Patricia snarled, turning her venom toward me. “You seduced my son, you turned him against me, and now you bring this… this whore into my house?!”
*SLAP.*
The sound cracked like a rifle shot across the foyer.
It wasn’t Ethan who struck her. It wasn’t me.
Margaret stood inches from Patricia, her gloved hand lowered, her chest heaving with cold fury.
Patricia clutched her cheek, her eyes wide with shock, entirely unaccustomed to facing the violence she so readily dealt to others.
“You will never speak to my son’s wife that way again,” Margaret whispered,
every syllable laced with steel. “You slapped her in front of her child three days ago, Patricia. Did you think that debt would go unpaid?”
“Finch!” Patricia screamed, tears of rage and humiliation leaking down her foundation-caked cheeks. “Do something! Sue them! Have them arrested!”
Harold Finch took off his glasses, his hands shaking as he looked up from the documents. “Patricia… be quiet.”
Patricia froze. “What?”
“Be quiet,” Finch repeated, his voice hollow. “Arthur didn’t just give Ethan the deed to this house. The irrevocable trust terms specify that in the event of an undisclosed forged adoption settlement, the entire corpus reverts retroactively to the biological mother and child. All disbursements made to you over the last thirty years are classified as unauthorized conversions of trust assets.”
Chap 17
Uncle Donald staggered backward off the porch,
looking at his sister-in-law as if she had suddenly transformed into a radioactive corpse. “Thirty-four million? Patricia… you told the family Ethan stole your inheritance! You told us he forged Arthur’s signature on the house deed!”
“He did! They did!” Patricia screamed, her composure entirely disintegrating. She grabbed Finch’s lapels, shaking the older attorney violently. “Find a loophole, Harold! You drafted the probate papers after Arthur died! You said everything was ironclad!”
“I acted on the records *you* provided!” Finch hissed, shoving her hands away in disgust. “You swore under oath that Margaret Cole signed the relinquishment affidavit voluntarily before a notary in Cook County! That notary died in federal prison twenty years ago for document forgery, Patricia! If this goes to a federal grand jury, I’m facing disbarment and accessory charges!”
Finch backed down the steps,
entirely abandoning her. “Do not contact my office again. Retain a criminal defense attorney.”
“Harold! Harold, come back here!” she wailed, but the attorney was already climbing into his sedan, reversing out of the gravel turnaround without looking back.
Uncle Donald looked at Ethan, then at Margaret, his voice cracking with panic. “Ethan… listen to me, boy. We didn’t know. The rest of the family—we only knew what Patricia told us at Christmas dinner. She said your wife disrespected her, that you were trying to freeze her out of her home…”
“You called my daughter ‘trailer trash,’ Donald,” Ethan said, his voice flat and merciless. “You stood by the buffet and laughed while Patricia threw our bags onto the driveway in the snow.”
“Ethan, please—”
“Get off my property,” Ethan ordered. “If your car is still on this road in sixty seconds, I’m having the county impound it for trespassing.”
Donald didn’t wait for a second warning. He sprinted to his truck, tires spinning in the slush as he tore down the driveway, leaving Patricia standing entirely alone on the front steps of the mansion she had claimed as her kingdom for thirty years.
The wind picked up, swirling snow around the hem of her open fur coat. She looked small, withered, and thoroughly stripped of the terrifying aura she had wielded against us for years.
