Nora lit one candle.

Grace immediately tried to grab the flame.

Everyone shouted at once.

Sarah laughed so hard she cried.

For a moment, she looked toward the balcony.

She remembered falling.

She remembered the terrible emptiness beneath her.

Then she remembered Arthur’s arms catching her before the floor did.

He noticed where she was looking.

“You all right?”

Sarah nodded.

“I used to think this house belonged to the person who controlled it.”

Arthur looked around at the open doors, the noise, the sunlight, the baby smearing frosting across Daniel’s shirt.

“And now?”

“Now I think a home belongs to the people who feel safe inside it.”

Daniel lifted Grace high enough to make her squeal.

Nora complained about frosting on the rug.

Arthur pretended not to smile.

Sarah slipped the restored ultrasound picture from her purse. She had carried it all year.

The tear down the center was still visible.

She no longer wanted to hide it.

The scar was part of the story.

Not the ending.

She placed the picture beside Grace’s birthday cake.

One year earlier, Eleanor Vance had torn that image in half because she believed fear could erase a future.

She had been wrong.

Grace reached for the photograph with sticky fingers.

Sarah caught her tiny hand and kissed it.

Then she looked around the room at the family that had survived cruelty, cowardice, secrets, and finally truth.

“Make a wish,” Daniel said.
