It showed a hospital corridor, a nurse holding a newborn baby, and a man standing near the elevator.
The man was my father.
On the back, someone had written:
October 16, 2009. Richard knew which daughter was alive.
Peter stared at the picture.
Then the office door opened.
Dr. Whitmore stepped inside without waiting for permission.
His face was pale, and his hands shook as he removed a folded document from his coat.
“Eleanor,” he said, “you have to listen to me.””
Peter moved between us.
“You should leave.””
Whitmore ignored him.
“I lied to Catherine. I lied to Richard. And I lied to you.””
I stepped around Peter.
“Which baby died?””
Whitmore closed his eyes.
“The baby whose identity you were given.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Was I the baby who died?””
He nodded slowly.
“The child registered as Eleanor died shortly after birth. You survived, but your identity was changed.””
I felt as if I were watching my life from somewhere outside my body.
“Then who am I?””
Whitmore opened his eyes.
“You are Madison Bennett.””
The words echoed through the room.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No. My name is Eleanor.””
“That’s the name you were given.””
Peter grabbed Whitmore’s arm.
“You told Catherine the same thing?””
Whitmore nodded.
“She eventually discovered the records. Richard wanted her silenced, but she refused to stop searching. Victoria arranged for her to be transferred to a private facility under a false identity.””
“And you helped them?””
“I did.””
“Why are you telling us this now?””
Whitmore reached into his coat again.
He pulled out a second photograph.
This one showed a little girl standing beside my father at a beach.
She was perhaps five years old, with dark hair and a crescent-shaped scar beneath her left eyebrow.
The girl looked exactly like me.
But the date on the photograph was 2004.
Five years before the twins were born.
I stared at it.
“Who is that child?””
Whitmore’s expression crumpled.
“The first Eleanor Bennett.””
My pulse thundered in my ears.
“You said she died.””
“I said the infant registered under that name died. I never said the original Eleanor died.””
Peter went completely still.
Whitmore lowered his voice.
“Richard had another daughter before Catherine gave birth to the twins. A daughter he never told Catherine about. A daughter Victoria knew about from the beginning.””
I stared at the photograph.
The girl on the beach had my face.
My scar.
My eyes.
And according to the date, she had existed years before I was born.
Whitmore took a final breath.
“The original Eleanor Bennett was not your sister.””
He looked directly at me.
“She was your father’s first daughter.””
May you like
Then he turned toward the door.
“And if Victoria finds out I’ve told you this, she’ll make sure none of us ever gets to tell the rest.””
