“There was a loan application filed against our house.”
His eyes opened.
“What?”
“Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
“That’s impossible.”
“It was rejected because the bank called my former office to verify employment information.”
“Why didn’t they call us?”
“They did. The number on the application wasn’t ours.”
His face went still.
Claire continued.
“My signature was forged.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Who filed it?”
“The LLC listed as borrower was connected to one of Vanessa’s real estate projects.”
He stepped closer to the bed.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“Absolutely sure?”
“Yes.”
His anger returned, but this time it was different from the explosive rage on the patio.
This anger was colder.
More controlled.
More dangerous.
“And you had all of that in the envelope?”
“Copies. Not originals.”
“Where are the originals?”
Claire reached for her phone.
“In cloud storage, with my attorney.”
Ethan stopped.
“You already spoke to a lawyer?”
“Not about divorcing you.”
Despite everything, that almost made him laugh.
Almost.
“Claire.”
“I spoke to Melissa Grant because I didn’t know whether someone had committed bank fraud using my identity. I needed legal advice before confronting anyone.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“You thought I’d protect them.”
That hurt him.
She saw it.
But he nodded.
“That’s fair.”
A knock came at the door.
A police officer entered.
“Mr. and Mrs. Bennett?”
Ethan stood.
The officer introduced herself as Detective Lena Ross, though she explained that patrol officers had initially responded and she had been called after witnesses described the shove as deliberate.
“We need to document what happened.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
He squeezed her hand.
“Tell her.”
So Claire did.
She described stepping outside.
The impact.
Vanessa behind her.
The fall.
Margaret striking Ethan.
The struggle beside the pool.
She did not exaggerate.
She did not minimize.
When she finished, Detective Ross asked, “Do you have exterior security cameras?”
Ethan nodded.
“Seven.”
“Covering the patio?”
“Yes.”
“Cloud storage?”
“Yes.”
Detective Ross wrote something down.
“We’ll need the recordings.”
“You can have them.”
Claire watched him.
That answer came without hesitation.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
The home security company.
He answered immediately.
“This is Ethan Bennett.”
He listened.
His expression changed.
“What time?”
Claire’s skin went cold.
Ethan looked toward her.
“Send me the alert history.”
He hung up.
“What happened?” Claire asked.
He did not answer immediately.
Detective Ross lowered her notebook.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Our security system recorded someone entering my study ten minutes after the ambulance left.”
Claire whispered, “Your mother.”
Ethan’s jaw flexed.
“There’s an interior camera in the hallway.”
Detective Ross stood.
“Can you access it remotely?”
Ethan opened the security application.
His thumb moved across the screen.
He selected a time stamp.
The footage loaded.
Margaret appeared in the hallway, still dripping wet from the pool.
She looked left.
Then right.
She entered the study.
Six minutes later, she came out holding Claire’s tan purse.
Claire stopped breathing.
Margaret carried it to the downstairs guest room.
She disappeared inside.
Two minutes later she emerged without it.
Detective Ross looked at Ethan.
“Can you lock that room remotely?”
“Yes.”
“Do it.”
He pressed a button.
A digital lock engaged sixty miles away.
Claire looked at her husband.
His face had become almost unreadable.
The woman who raised him had just been recorded removing evidence from his study minutes after his pregnant wife was taken to a hospital.
Ethan called his head of household security.
“Daniel, nobody enters the guest room. Nobody touches anything. Police are coming back.”
A pause.
“No. My mother does not have permission.”
Another pause.
“Neither does Vanessa.”
He ended the call.
Claire whispered, “Ethan.”
He sat down again.
For the first time that night, his shoulders sagged.
“She knew.”
Claire did not answer.
He looked at her.
“My mother knew what Vanessa had done.”
“We don’t know everything yet.”
“She searched your things.”
“Yes.”
“She tried to take the evidence.”
“Yes.”
The truth seemed to land piece by piece.
Then Dr. Morales returned.
Her expression was calm, but she brought a nurse with her.
“Claire, I’m seeing more contractions.”
Ethan stood immediately.
“Is the baby okay?”
“The heartbeat is still reassuring. But I want to give medication to help the baby’s lungs in case we end up needing an early delivery.”
Claire’s fear returned full force.
“Delivery?”
“It is a precaution.”
Ethan leaned over her.
“You hear that? Precaution.”
But his own face betrayed him.
He was terrified.
Claire gripped his shirt.
“Don’t leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Outside the room, Detective Ross’s phone rang.
She stepped into the hallway.
When she returned several minutes later, her expression had changed.
“Mr. Bennett.”
Ethan looked up.
“Officers recovered your wife’s purse.”
Claire exhaled.
“The envelope?”
Detective Ross paused.
“The envelope was there.”
Ethan waited.
“But it was empty.”
The hospital room went completely silent.
Someone had removed the documents.

And if Margaret had not found the envelope until after Claire left, then someone else had known exactly what Claire was carrying before Vanessa pushed her.
The conspiracy inside the Bennett family was larger than either of them had imagined.
