Claire turned toward Thomas.
Rachel.
Present tense in his tone.
Protecting Rachel’s daughter.
Not “your mother’s memory.”
Not “what Rachel wanted.”
Something about it bothered Claire.
“Thomas.”
He would not look at her.
“Thomas.”
Still nothing.
Claire took one step toward him.
“My mother died in 1999.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Harrison smiled wider.
And Claire knew before anyone spoke that another piece of her childhood had been built on a lie.
Daniel whispered, “Claire, don’t.”
She ignored him.
“Thomas. Is my mother alive?”
A long silence.
Then from somewhere behind the chapel came the sound of another vehicle approaching over gravel.
Everyone turned.
An old blue pickup appeared at the bend.
It stopped.
Driver’s door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Sixties.
Dark hair streaked with gray.
Green eyes.
Claire had those eyes.
The woman looked across twenty-seven years of stolen time.
Her mouth trembled.
“Claire?”
Claire could not move.
Daniel backed away.
Thomas lowered his head.
Harrison’s smile disappeared.
The woman took one slow step forward.
“My name is Rachel Bennett.”
Claire heard Melissa gasp beside her.
Rachel’s eyes filled, but she stayed controlled.
Exactly like Claire.
“There wasn’t enough time to explain everything,” Rachel said. “And if Harrison is here, then we have minutes, not hours.”
Claire finally found her voice.
“Where is my father?”
Rachel looked past her toward Daniel.
Then toward the old chapel.
And said the sentence that changed the entire story again.
“Your father is the reason Daniel tried to stop you.”
Claire stared.
Rachel continued.
“Evan is alive.”
The wind moved through Red Hollow.
Nobody spoke.
Claire felt the ledger beneath her coat.
The deed missing from the box.
The carriage hidden in the mountains.
Twenty-seven years of lies.
And the husband who had just tried to make sure she never reached forty-two.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Claire, we need to leave before they find out Evan has the original deed.”
Claire’s heart slammed once.
“Where is he?”
Her mother looked toward the mountains.
Then back at her.
“In the one place they’ve been searching for twenty-seven years.”
And behind Harrison Vale, one of the black SUV doors opened.
A man stepped out holding an old leather briefcase.
Claire recognized the face from the locket immediately.
Her father.
Older.
Alive.
And looking directly at Daniel as if this confrontation had been planned long before Claire ever reached the mountain.
