“Fire her before she starts asking questions. Do you understand me?””

Richard’s voice came through Jasmine’s phone, clear enough for the guests nearest us to hear every word.

The video showed a private service corridor in the hotel, recorded from an angle near a storage cabinet.

Richard stood beside Vanessa, holding a folder.

A young employee stood in front of them, crying.

Vanessa pointed a manicured finger at the girl.

“You have two choices,” she said in the recording.

“You resign quietly, or we make sure no hotel in Atlanta ever hires you again.””

The employee shook her head.

“I didn’t steal anything, Mrs. Collins. I only told the supervisor that you asked me to change the invoice.””

Richard slammed the folder against the wall.

“Keep talking, and you’ll regret it.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the screen.

“Jasmine,” I said, “when was this recorded?””

“Two weeks ago, ma’am.””

“Who is the employee?””

“Her name is Emily. She worked banquets. She quit the next day.””

“Why didn’t she report this?””

Jasmine looked down.

“She tried. She sent an email to the office, but Mr. Harrison’s assistant told her there wasn’t enough evidence. Emily was afraid they’d ruin her reputation.””

Thomas Harrison stiffened.

“That’s the first I’ve heard of this.””

Jasmine met his eyes.

“Respectfully, sir, people have been afraid to tell you things for a long time.””

The words struck harder than Vanessa’s slap.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Is that true?””

He opened his mouth, then glanced at the surrounding guests.

“Miss Bennett, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“No,” I said.

“Apparently, the problem has been private for too long.””

Richard gave a short, forced laugh.

“This is ridiculous. My wife and I have supported this hotel for years. We’re being ambushed over an edited video taken out of context.””

Vanessa recovered enough to lift her chin.

“Exactly. This girl is probably trying to get a promotion.””

Jasmine flinched, but she didn’t retreat.

“I never asked for a promotion. I asked for someone to listen.””

I looked at her phone.

“Do you have the original recording?””

“Yes. It’s backed up.””

“Good. Don’t delete anything, don’t send it to anyone else, and don’t confront them about it again. I’ll have our legal team preserve the evidence.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“You’re making a serious mistake, Olivia.””

It was the first time he had said my name without pretending to be polite.

I noticed.

So did everyone else.

“Am I?”” I asked.

He stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“My company sponsors several major events in this city. I know judges, council members, and half the business owners in Atlanta. You don’t want a public war with me over a misunderstanding.””

I looked at the wine dripping from my sleeve.

“Your wife slapped me in front of two hundred witnesses and poured wine over my head. What part of that requires interpretation?””

His jaw flexed.

“Vanessa was upset.””

“Then she should have stepped away. Instead, she chose to hurt someone she believed couldn’t fight back.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Oh, please. You’re acting as if I committed a crime.””

“I haven’t made any legal conclusions,” I replied.

“That’s why we’re preserving the evidence.””

She glanced around, searching for a friendly face.

Several guests suddenly found their shoes fascinating.

One older man stepped forward.

“My name is Arthur Miller,” he said.

“I’m on the board of the Children’s Foundation. I saw what happened tonight.””

He looked at Richard.

“And if that recording is authentic, I’d like an explanation for what you’re doing in our employees’ private work areas.””

Richard’s eyes darted toward him.

“Arthur, this doesn’t concern the foundation.””

“Then why did you bring a folder into a hotel service corridor and threaten an employee?””

Richard had no answer.

I turned to Thomas.

“Please escort Mr. and Mrs. Collins to a private room. They are not to be detained, but they are no longer welcome to approach staff or interfere with the event.””

Vanessa gasped.

“You can’t throw us out!””

“I own the property,” I said evenly.

“And I’m asking you to leave voluntarily.””

Richard caught her elbow.

“Vanessa. Enough.””

For the first time that evening, she looked frightened.

But as security accompanied them toward the ballroom doors, she twisted around.

“You’ll regret humiliating me, Olivia!””

I watched her go.

“I’m not the one who humiliated you,” I said.

“You managed that yourself.””

The ballroom slowly came back to life, but the celebration had changed. Guests gathered in small groups, whispering about the recording. Several donors approached me to express their concern.

I thanked them, but my attention remained on Jasmine.

She stood near the service entrance, twisting the hem of her uniform between her fingers.

“Come with me,” I said gently.

“Let’s talk somewhere quiet.””
