Who the hell did you just call?”
He didn’t get a chance to answer.
Through the front window, I saw headlights sweep across the gravel driveway and go dark.
A car door opened and closed.
Boots came up the path.
Danny walked to the door and unlocked both locks, the deadbolt and the vault one, and he opened it, and I stood up behind him to see who was out there.
The same man from the funeral home stepped across the threshold.
Same dark blue dress uniform.
Same peaked cap in his hand.
He looked at me first, the way a man looks at a piece on a chess board he already moved, and then he looked at my brother.
“Captain,” Danny said, and his voice had gone somewhere I had never heard it go before.
The officer nodded at him and then at me.
“Hello, Frank,” he said.
“We’ve been expecting you.”
