“I didn’t come back alone.”

The wounded soldier’s words seemed to erase every other sound from the beach.

Admiral James Carter’s hand moved instinctively toward his sidearm.

The security officers reacted faster.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Two weapons came up.

Lieutenant Ryan Cole stepped backward.

The injured man slowly reached inside his torn jacket.

“Easy,” he said.

“Take your hand out,” one guard ordered.

“Slowly.”

The soldier obeyed.

But there was no weapon in his hand.

There was only a small black device.

A battered  military data drive.

Carter recognized the faded red stripe across its side immediately.

His face lost its color.

“Where did you get that?”

The soldier looked directly at him.

“You gave it to me.”

Cole frowned.

“Admiral?”

Carter said nothing.

The stranger held up the drive.

“Fifteen years ago.”

A long silence followed.

Then Carter spoke through clenched teeth.

“Everyone back to the  vehicles.”

Cole stared at him.

“Sir, this man has no identification, no active record, and he just mentioned a classified operation.”

“I said back to the vehicles.”

“But—”

“That is an order, Lieutenant.”

Cole reluctantly stepped away.

The security officers lowered their weapons, but neither of them relaxed.

The wounded man smiled faintly.

“Still good at making inconvenient people disappear, Carter.”

Carter grabbed him by the arm.

“Walk.”

They moved toward an abandoned observation building near the edge of the training grounds.

It had once been used to monitor amphibious exercises.

Now its windows were covered with salt, and rust streaked the metal  door.

Cole followed several steps behind.

Carter turned sharply.

“Not you.”

Cole stopped.

“With respect, sir, I found him.”

“And now you’re going to forget you did.”

Something in Carter’s voice made Cole’s expression harden.

For years, Ryan Cole had considered Admiral James Carter one of the most disciplined officers in the Navy.

He had never seen fear in him.

Not during live-fire exercises.

Not during emergency briefings.

Not even when an aircraft had crashed fifty yards from the command tower.

But Carter was afraid now.

Terrified.

Cole watched the two men disappear inside the building.

Then he looked down.

Something lay in the sand.

The wounded soldier must have dropped it.

A small metal photograph case.

Cole picked it up.

Inside was a faded picture of twelve soldiers standing in front of a helicopter.

Most were smiling.

One of them was much younger, but unmistakable.

James Carter.

Another was the wounded man.

On the back, three words had been written in black ink.

BLACK TIDE TEAM.

Cole’s pulse quickened.

Beneath the photograph was a date.

Fifteen years earlier.

Inside the observation room, Carter slammed the metal door shut.

“What do you want?”

The stranger leaned against the wall.

His strength was fading.

Blood had soaked through a bandage beneath his uniform.

“My name would be a good place to start.”

Carter looked away.

“David Mercer.”

The soldier smiled.

“So you do remember.”

“I remember twelve men.”

“Eleven.”

Carter looked back at him.

Mercer’s expression turned cold.

“You were number twelve.”

Carter’s jaw tightened.

“That mission was supposed to be reconnaissance.”

“No.”

Mercer shook his head.

“That’s what they told us.”

He placed the data drive on a dusty table.

“We were sent to recover something.”

Carter’s eyes remained fixed on the device.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Mercer laughed bitterly.

“Still lying after fifteen years.”

“I signed the orders, David. I know exactly what happened.”

“Then tell me why command ordered the extraction helicopter to leave us behind.”

Carter froze.

Mercer stepped closer.

“Tell me why our coordinates were erased.”

No answer.

“Tell me why every member of Black Tide was declared dead before anyone even searched for bodies.”

Carter turned toward the window.

Outside, waves crashed against the rocks.

“I tried to stop it.”

Mercer stared at him.

“You signed the report.”

“I was ordered to.”

“You told our families we were dead.”

“I had no choice!”

The words exploded from Carter.

Mercer went silent.

Carter breathed heavily.

For the first time, the powerful admiral looked less like a commander and more like a man who had carried the same nightmare for fifteen years.

“They threatened my wife,” Carter said quietly.

“My son was six years old.”

Mercer’s anger did not disappear.

But something changed in his eyes.

“Who threatened you?”

Carter looked at the data drive.

“People you don’t understand.”
