I remembered how particular he’d been about the angle. When I’d moved the bookshelf to make room for wedding gifts, he’d put it back. He said the room looked better that way. I’d believed him.
Caroline returned to the kitchen. Maya was on the phone with another officer. Caroline asked if she could sit beside me. I nodded, though I wasn’t ready to talk to her.
“I saw the alert when you came home,” she said. “I was already driving over. I should have called the police before I got here.”
“You should have called me on the honeymoon.”
“Yes.” She looked at her hands. “Grant said the video with Maya was an argument. He told me she didn’t want anyone seeing it. I asked her this afternoon. That was the first time I knew she was afraid of him.”

Caroline had known enough to save it. I was angry that she’d waited, and relieved that she’d finally acted. I couldn’t say either thing yet.
Maya spoke to the officers by phone that night. I heard only what they later asked me to confirm: whether Grant had used the same belt, and whether I’d seen him reach for the camera after I called 911. I had seen the belt. I had seen him pull the speaker’s cord. I hadn’t seen him touch the camera, and I said so.
The officers kept our accounts separate. They photographed the room and took the belt after Grant agreed to hand it over. They arrested him for threatening me. They told me Maya’s account and the recordings would be investigated separately. I asked whether I could stay somewhere else,

and one officer waited while I packed.
I went to my friend Tessa’s apartment. She opened the door, saw the suitcase and the marks on my wrist, and pulled out a chair. I called my coach from her kitchen. He’d known Grant had laughed at my training; he hadn’t known Grant had threatened me. I hated how much I had to say aloud before it felt real.
The next morning, I watched the recording with a victim advocate present. It showed Grant holding the belt while Maya sat on our couch, shielding her face. He struck the couch beside her and told her to keep quiet about money he owed her. The recording ended when she left. It did not show every part of their history, and Maya deserved to tell that herself.

I recognized the couch. I wanted to throw it into the street. Instead, I asked the advocate how to get my things safely.
Over the following weeks, Maya gave investigators her account. Caroline provided the file Grant had sent her, along with their messages about deleting it. The house account still held the clip of him arranging the camera before our wedding and the footage from the night we returned. Grant’s video showed me taking him down, but the wider view also showed the belt in his hand and his first swing. The officers had my 911 call as well.
My lawyer helped me seek a protective order and begin a divorce. Grant contested the order. At the hearing, I answered questions about why I’d put on my gloves. I said I had seen him unbuckle his belt and heard his threat.

I’d put them on because I thought he would hit me. My hands shook while I spoke. I kept speaking.
The judge granted the order. The criminal cases took longer. I wasn’t in the room for every interview or decision, and I stopped trying to learn everything about Maya’s case through Caroline. Maya called me once to say she was glad I’d gotten out. I thanked her for speaking up. We left it there.
Months later, Grant pleaded guilty to charges arising from his threat to me and his conduct toward Maya. The court imposed a sentence and continued restrictions on contacting us. I got the final divorce papers on a Tuesday. Tessa sat with me while I signed the last page.
I still train. My gloves hang beside my front door now, although I hope never to need them outside the gym again. I remember Grant begging me to stop, and I remember how badly I wanted him to stop reaching for my phone. Once the officers arrived, I could finally let go.
That is the part of the night I come back to. I opened the door. I told them what happened. Then I left with my own suitcase.Part 3
