Chương 18
Before anyone could speak, Major Evans’s encrypted military smartphone began to vibrate furiously against his belt.
He unclipped the device, checked the caller ID, and brought it to his ear. “Major Evans.”
The Major listened in absolute silence for fifteen seconds. His posture, already rigid, stiffened until the muscles in his neck stood out like iron cables.
“Understood, Colonel,” Evans said, his voice chillingly neutral. “We are currently at an off-site civilian depository with the Virginia Beach Police Department… No, sir. Captain Green is in my custody. We will report to the division headquarters immediately.”
Evans ended the call. He lowered the phone, looking at me with an expression of profound, grave sorrow.
“Major?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. “What is it?”
“That was the Staff Judge Advocate at Marine Corps Installations East,” Major Evans said, his voice heavy with grim consequence. “Twenty minutes ago, while we were in Courtroom 4B, an anonymous digital dossier was delivered via encrypted courier to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Department of Defense Inspector General.”
“The dossier contained copies of these exact Vanguard Maritime records,” Orion gasped.
“It contained the complete fraudulent corporate ledger,” Evans confirmed. “Including fabricated emails purporting to show Captain Green authorizing the diversion of military surplus transport containers through Norfolk harbor. NCIS has just initiated an emergency Article 32 preliminary inquiry. A federal warrant has been issued to freeze all of Katherine’s personal and military bank accounts.”
“They can’t do that!” Orion yelled, stepping forward, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. “She was the victim! Her arm is in a sling! She’s the one who called the police! She recorded the assault!”
“The assault is a civilian felony handled by the Commonwealth,” Evans said, his eyes never leaving mine. “The foreign wire transfers and the defense contracting fraud fall under Title 18 of the United States Code and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. As of five minutes ago, Katherine’s Top Secret security clearance has been formally suspended. An NCIS apprehension team is currently en route to Orion’s house to place her under formal military restraint.”
The vault suddenly felt as small and airless as a coffin.
The physical pain in my separated shoulder flared into a blinding, white-hot pulse. Everything I had built—my commission, my father’s honorable legacy, my twelve years of flawless service to the Corps—was teetering on the edge of complete, catastrophic annihilation. Alistair had anticipated every move. Even from behind the reinforced glass of a maximum-security holding cell, his venom had reached across the city to strike me down.
“We have the physical evidence right here,” Valyrius said urgently, scooping the forged documents back toward the warrant folder. “I can testify. I can provide the chain of custody. The ink on these auxiliary agreements hasn’t even settled! We caught Croft’s associate red-handed trying to extract this box!”
“It doesn’t matter yet, Detective,” Major Evans replied, his voice laced with the cold reality of military law. “NCIS doesn’t pause an active espionage and procurement investigation because a local detective has a theory. Until a forensic document examiner certifies that every signature was forged, and until the Department of Justice formally clears her name, Captain Green is considered a compromised asset and a flight risk under federal custody.”
Suddenly, the heavy glass door of the depository foyer rattled.
Through the security monitors mounted above the vault entrance, we saw two dark, unmarked government sport utility vehicles pull up violently against the curb outside, blocking Valyrius’s police cruiser.
Four agents wearing windbreakers with bold, golden letters emblazoned across the back—*NCIS* and *FBI JOINT TERRORISM & FINANCIAL CRIMES TASK FORCE*—stepped out onto the pavement, their badges out, moving swiftly toward the entrance.
“They didn’t go to Orion’s house,” Valyrius whispered, staring at the monitor. “They tracked Croft’s associate’s phone. They’re here.”

Orion moved instinctively, placing his massive frame between me and the vault door, his eyes wild with protective fury. “They are not taking my sister. She belongs in a hospital, not a military lockup!”
“Stand down, Lieutenant!” Major Evans commanded, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. “If you obstruct federal agents executing an Article 32 warrant, you will be in federal custody before they put the cuffs on her. That helps no one.”
