Chương 19

Evans turned to me. He reached out with his left hand and placed it firmly on my good shoulder, his dark eyes locked onto mine with unshakable intensity.

“Listen to me, Katherine,” Evans said, his voice low, steady, and commanding. “This is an ambush, but an ambush only succeeds if the target panics. You are a United States Marine. You survived that house. You survived his fists. You will survive this interrogation. Do not say a single word without your military defense counsel present. Detective Valyrius and I will secure these physical drafts, these property deeds, and this depository registry under state court seal before NCIS can seize them into federal black-box evidence.”

“Major…” I breathed, the ground beneath my boots feeling like quicksand.

“Keep your head up, Captain,” Major Evans ordered, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “Pain is temporary. Quitting is forever. We are going to war for your life, and we are not leaving you behind.”

The heavy vault door hissed open with a pneumatic release.

Two armed federal agents stepped into the threshold, their badges raised, their eyes locking onto my uniform and the dark purple bruises marking my face.

“Captain Katherine Green?” the lead agent announced, his voice echoing off the stainless steel lockers. “Special Agent Vance Miller, NCIS. By order of the Regional Convening Authority, you are being placed under provisional military arrest pending investigation into grand larceny, conspiracy, and procurement fraud against the United States.”

Orion took a ragged, furious breath, but I placed my good left hand on his arm, holding him back.

I looked the federal agent dead in the eye, took a deep, steady breath through the pain racking my body, and stepped forward to face the storm.

Chapter 5: The Triumph of the Unbroken

The fluorescent lights of the federal interrogation suite at Naval Station Norfolk hummed with a sterile, relentless vibration.

I sat with my left hand resting flat on the cold steel table, my right arm still pinned tightly to my ribs inside its immobilizing sling. On the opposite side of the table sat Special Agent Vance Miller of NCIS and Assistant United States Attorney Claire Holloway. Between us lay the thick digital dossier that had been delivered to the Pentagon Inspector General, its printouts stamped with urgent red classification markers.

For nearly two hours, Agent Miller had pressed through line after line of the alleged corporate filings, demanding explanations for container ship manifests, foreign bank transfers, and procurement signatures bearing my name.

I had remained silent, exactly as Major Evans had ordered.

The heavy steel door of the interview room buzzed, swinging open with a sharp mechanical click.

Major Evans stepped across the threshold, his garrison cap tucked under his left arm, flanked by Lieutenant Commander Sarah Chen, an elite military defense counsel from the Navy-Marine Corps Appellate Defense Division. Behind them, carrying two reinforced plastic evidence cases, walked Detective Valyrius.

“This interview is terminated,” Lieutenant Commander Chen announced with crisp, razor-sharp authority, setting her briefcase down on the table. “Agent Miller, you are questioning an active-duty Marine Corps captain without providing the full statutory exculpatory disclosures required under Article 31 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”

Agent Miller frowned, leaning back in his chair. “Commander, Captain Green is the registered fifty-one percent owner of an entity that routed four million dollars in illicit foreign capital through Norfolk harbor. We have her signature on the incorporation documents.”

“No, Agent Miller,” Detective Valyrius said, stepping forward and placing a fresh stack of sworn affidavits directly on top of the federal file. “You have the signature of a corrupt notary named Evelyn Vance-Reyes, who was arrested by Virginia Beach detectives two hours ago at her townhouse in Chesapeake.”

Miller’s eyes widened slightly. Holloway sat up straighter, pulling the affidavits toward her.

“Evelyn Vance-Reyes is Alistair Vance’s first cousin,” Valyrius explained, his voice ringing with absolute, earned triumph. “When my team executed the search warrant at her home, we seized her official Commonwealth of Virginia notary log, along with the high-resolution digital scanner Alistair used to forge Captain Green’s signature. She gave a full, video-recorded confession in exchange for a state plea recommendation.”

Lieutenant Commander Chen opened her briefcase, laying out a series of authenticated military travel records and biometric passport scans.
