Ruth looked at the papers.
Then at me.
“Oh, Eleanor.”
I began crying.
She sat beside me.
Wrapped her arms around my shoulders.
And held me.
For a long time,
neither of us spoke.
Then I whispered,
“I gave them everything.”
Ruth stroked my hair.
“I know.”
“I never asked for rent.”
“I raised those children”
“while their parents worked.”
“I paid for repairs.”
“School activities.”
“Vacations.”
“Birthdays.”
“I made room”
“for every part of their lives.”
My voice broke.
“And now they think”
“I can’t take care”
“of my own?”
Ruth held me tighter.
Then said quietly,
“Eleanor, their accusations”
“don’t make them true.”
I closed my eyes.
She continued.
“You’re not powerless.”
“And you’re not alone.”
I looked at her.
Ruth smiled through tears.
“We’re going to handle this.”

That evening,
Connor returned home early.
He looked exhausted.
He stood in the kitchen doorway
holding his briefcase.
“Mom?”
I looked up.
“Yes?”
“Did you read the documents?”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
I remained quiet.
He took a breath.
“Melinda told me”
“the statements were routine.”
I looked at him.
“Connor, you signed them.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
“You described me”
“as financially confused.”
He looked down.
“I shouldn’t have.”
“No.”
“You shouldn’t.”
He rubbed his face.
“Mom, I never wanted”
“to take your house.”
I studied him carefully.
“Then why did you”
“agree to these plans?”
He hesitated.
“Because Melinda said”
“we needed a fresh start.”
I nodded slowly.
“And your fresh start”
“required me to leave?”
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t think”
“it would happen like this.”
I looked away.
“That’s the problem, Connor.”
“You didn’t think”
“about what would happen”
“to me.”
He began crying.
I waited.
Then asked,
“Did you know”
“about the four-hundred-twenty-thousand-dollar application?”
His head lifted.
“What?”
I watched his face.
He looked genuinely shocked.
“The what?”
I repeated the amount.
His face drained.
“Mom, no.”
He shook his head.
“I didn’t know”
“anything about that.”
I took a slow breath.
“Then you need”
“to ask your wife”
“some very serious questions.”
Connor stared at me.
Then whispered,
“How far did she go?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know yet.
***
Melinda returned home
shortly after seven.
Connor met her
in the hallway.
I remained in the study.
Ruth sat beside me.
We could hear
their voices downstairs.
At first,
the conversation was quiet.
Then Connor’s voice rose.
“Four hundred twenty thousand dollars?”
Melinda answered sharply.
“Keep your voice down.”
“Did you apply for that loan?”
There was silence.
Then she said,
“It wasn’t finalized.”
Connor sounded horrified.
“Using Mom’s house?”
Melinda snapped,
“It was supposed to help everyone.”
I closed my eyes.
Then Connor shouted,
“How does putting Mom’s house”
“at risk help her?”
Melinda’s reply
made my stomach turn.
“Because she’ll be better off”
“somewhere she can be supervised!”
Ruth looked at me.
Her expression hardened.
Downstairs,
Connor went silent.
Then he asked,
“Who said she needs supervision?”
Melinda replied,
“We have documentation.”
My heartbeat accelerated.
What documentation?
Connor asked the same question.
“What documentation?”
There was a pause.
Then Melinda said,
“You’re going to ruin everything.”
Connor’s voice became quiet.
“What have you done?”
I stood slowly.
My knees felt weak.
Ruth reached for my hand.
“Stay here.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I walked toward the doorway.
And listened.
Then I heard Melinda say
something that made
every part of me go cold.
“The petition is already filed.”
Connor’s voice cracked.
“What petition?”
Melinda answered impatiently.
“The one asking the court”
“to protect your mother’s assets.”
For several seconds,
the house became silent.
Then Connor whispered,
“Melinda, what did you do?”
She took a breath.
And delivered the words
that changed everything.
“I requested an emergency conservatorship.”
I gripped the stair railing.
My heart hammered.
Then she added,
“And I submitted your statement”
“as evidence she can’t”
“manage her own affairs.”
I closed my eyes.
But the worst was still coming.
Because Connor asked one final question.
“Who did you nominate”
“to control Mom’s finances?”
Melinda answered without hesitation.
“Me.”
