PART 2 SUMMARY: As Claire fights to recover, Daniel learns Mallory’s attack may have been about more than rage. A missing necklace from his mother’s funeral points toward a secret someone is desperate to erase.

Claire was taken into emergency surgery less than an hour later.

Daniel sat outside the operating room with dried dirt on his sleeves and Emma curled against him. Every few minutes, his daughter asked the same question.

“Is Mommy waking up?”

And every time, Daniel gave the only answer he could.

“The doctors are helping her.”

Mallory had also been brought to the hospital under police supervision. Her collarbone was fractured, but doctors said her injuries were not life-threatening. Once treated, she would be taken into custody.

Daniel knew he might face consequences too.

He had struck her in front of dozens of witnesses.

But the thought barely registered.

All he could see was Claire falling.

Detective Laura Pierce arrived before midnight.

She spoke gently because Emma was nearby.

“Your sister says your wife stole something from your mother.”

Daniel stared at her. “Mallory threw a planter at Claire while she was holding our daughter.”

“I know.”

“She could have killed both of them.”

Pierce lowered her voice. “I’m trying to understand why.”

Daniel looked away.

Helen’s death had already fractured the family. She had died suddenly six days earlier, apparently after accidentally taking too much of one of her heart medications.

Mallory had been difficult since then—angry, suspicious, almost obsessive about Helen’s estate.

But Daniel had never imagined this.

Emma shifted against him.

Then she whispered, “Aunt Mallory wanted Grandma’s cross.”

Daniel went still.

Pierce crouched slightly. “What did she say, Emma?”

The child rubbed her eyes.

“She kept saying Mommy had to give it to her.”

Daniel pictured Claire lying outside the church.

The silver cross.

His mother’s cross.

He suddenly remembered seeing it against Claire’s beige dress immediately after the impact.

He had noticed it because Helen had worn that necklace for most of his childhood.

But when paramedics loaded Claire onto the stretcher, he hadn’t seen it.

Daniel stood.

“The necklace is missing.”

Pierce’s expression sharpened.

The church courtyard was still partly closed off when Daniel returned with the detective the next morning.

Sunlight exposed what darkness had hidden: broken terracotta, flattened flowers, patches of spilled soil, and faint rust-colored stains on the stone.

Investigators had already collected the largest fragments.

Daniel searched anyway.

Near the place where Claire had fallen, he found a short piece of silver chain.

Broken.

His stomach tightened.

They searched beneath the benches and through the flower beds.

Nothing.

Then Daniel remembered the first pot—the one Mallory had thrown.

A church worker had swept most of its dirt into a plastic cleanup bin near the side entrance.

Daniel pulled on gloves and began searching through soil and broken roots.

Pierce watched without speaking.

His fingers struck metal.

He dug deeper.

The silver cross emerged beneath a crushed white flower.

Daniel stared at it.

The clasp was broken, but the pendant itself looked intact.

He rubbed away the dirt.

Something clicked beneath his thumb.

A tiny seam opened along the back.

Daniel frowned.

He had seen the cross thousands of times.

He had never known it opened.

Inside was a memory card no larger than his fingernail.

Pierce leaned closer.

“Did you know about that?”

“No.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

The hospital.

His heart stopped.

But it was only a nurse telling him Claire had come through surgery and remained unconscious but stable.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Stable.

He could breathe again.

For now.

Detective Pierce had the card copied before allowing Daniel to keep the original pendant. The files were encrypted, and the department’s digital unit would need time to examine them.

Daniel returned to the hospital.

Emma was asleep in a chair beside Claire’s bed.

Claire looked frighteningly pale beneath the monitors and bandages, but her breathing was steady.

Daniel sat beside her.

He took her hand.

“Whatever Mom gave you,” he whispered, “I’m going to find out why.”

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

NO POLICE.

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

A second message followed.

YOU FOUND THE CROSS.

He looked instinctively toward the hallway.

No one was there.

Then the final message appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET YOUR WIFE DIE WITH IT.
