PART 4 SUMMARY: Daniel’s father reveals what he concealed the night Helen died, and a hidden video finally identifies the person who manipulated everyone. Before police can act, the family’s youngest member becomes the next target.
Charles Bennett had spent six days pretending his wife’s death was an accident.
Now the truth came out in fragments.
The night Helen died, Mallory had called him shortly after ten.
She was hysterical.
Helen wasn’t responding.
Charles rushed to the house.
Robert was already there.
Mallory stood beside the kitchen table holding one of Helen’s prescription bottles.
“She said she’d found Mom on the floor,” Charles explained. “Robert told me Mallory must have mixed up the pills when she helped organize them earlier.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Did Mallory say that?”
“No.”
“So Robert said it.”
Charles nodded miserably.
Mallory had touched the bottle.
Her fingerprints were on it.
Robert convinced Charles that if they called police and handed over the medication, investigators could believe Mallory had caused Helen’s death deliberately.
Charles panicked.
He had already allowed Robert to move money from the church account.
Robert reminded him exactly what would happen if investigators examined the family finances.
So Charles removed the pill organizer before paramedics arrived.
“You destroyed evidence.”
“I thought I was protecting my daughter.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Charles did not deny it.
Robert later told Mallory a different version.
He claimed Claire had persuaded Helen to alter her will.
He said Claire had been gathering evidence intended to make Mallory look responsible for Helen’s death.
Then he showed Mallory screenshots of the fake messages.
Daniel finally understood how the pieces connected.
Mallory had arrived at the funeral believing Claire was about to hand police a hidden file proving she had killed her own mother.
It did not excuse the attack.
Nothing could.
But someone had deliberately aimed Mallory’s fear and anger at Claire.
“Why the cross?” Daniel asked.
Charles stared at him.
“What cross?”
That answer chilled Daniel more than anything else.
Robert had known about something Helen had hidden even though Charles had not.
Detective Pierce moved quickly.
Police searched Robert’s office and home.
They found financial documents, burner phones, and software capable of spoofing text-message accounts.
But Robert was gone.
His car remained at home.
His main phone had been switched off.
Meanwhile, technicians enhanced the kitchen video from Helen’s memory card.
There was more footage.
A motion clip had been stored under a damaged filename and initially overlooked.
Daniel watched it beside Pierce.
At 9:12 that night, Mallory entered Helen’s kitchen.
They argued.
There was no sound, but Mallory appeared upset.
She left at 9:31.
Helen remained alive.
At 9:46, Robert arrived.
He went directly to the cabinet.
This time, the angle was clearer.
He removed Helen’s medication.
Then he pulled a small container from his pocket and exchanged several tablets.
He wiped the bottle.
He replaced it.
At 10:17, Helen entered the kitchen alone.
She took her evening medication.
The final clip showed her leaning heavily against the counter before disappearing toward the hallway.
Mallory had not killed her mother.
Robert had poisoned the bottle.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Pierce immediately ordered units to locate him.
Daniel called Charles.
“Mallory didn’t do it.”
His father began crying.
For the first time since the funeral, Daniel felt no desire to comfort him.
Charles’s cowardice had helped keep Robert free long enough to attack the rest of the family through lies.
Mallory was questioned at the hospital detention unit.
When Pierce showed her the video, she broke down.
She admitted Robert had contacted her repeatedly after Helen’s death.
He told her Claire was responsible.
He told her the cross contained fabricated footage.
And on the morning of the funeral, he warned her Claire was about to deliver it to detectives.
“I wanted the necklace,” Mallory whispered.
Daniel stood across the room.
“You threw a flowerpot at my wife while she was holding Emma.”
Mallory covered her face.
“I know.”
“You could have killed them.”
“I know.”
Daniel felt anger, grief, and pity collide inside him.
But forgiveness would have to wait—if it ever came.
He returned to Claire’s room.
Emma had spent the afternoon with Charles in the hospital chapel while Claire rested. Charles had asked for one chance to sit with his granddaughter before police questioned him again.
Daniel went downstairs to bring her back.
The chapel was empty.
“Dad?”
No answer.
Daniel called Charles.
His father picked up immediately.
“Daniel?”
“Where’s Emma?”
Silence.
“What do you mean?”
“You had her.”
Charles’s breathing changed.
“I stepped outside because I got a call from someone saying Detective Pierce needed me in the lobby. When I came back—”
Daniel was already running.
Security footage showed Robert entering the chapel through a service corridor.
Emma recognized him.
