She took his hand.
Two minutes later, they disappeared through a side exit.
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared.
Emma sat inside an unfamiliar car, crying.
Beneath it was one message.
BRING HELEN’S CROSS TO THE CEMETERY GATE.
COME ALONE.
Chapter 5 – THE LAST SECRET AT THE CEMETERY GATE
PART 5 SUMMARY: With Emma in Robert’s hands, Daniel returns to the place where the nightmare began. The truth behind Helen’s death, the stolen money, and the attack on Claire finally comes into the open as the Bennett family faces the consequences of years of secrecy.
Daniel did not go alone.
He only made Robert believe he did.
Detective Pierce fitted him with a concealed transmitter while police units positioned themselves several blocks from St. Matthew’s.
The real memory card remained in evidence.
Around Daniel’s neck hung Helen’s silver cross with an identical blank card inside it.
Claire called just before he left.
Her voice was weak but steady.
“Bring our daughter home.”
“I will.”
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“Don’t let him make you angry enough to do something you can’t take back.”
Daniel understood.
Outside that same church, rage had already nearly destroyed two lives.
He would not give Robert another one.
Dusk settled over the cemetery when Daniel approached the iron gate.
The broken flowerpots had been removed.
Dark stains had been washed from the pavement.
Yet Daniel could still see Claire falling every time he looked toward the courtyard.
“Robert!”
A figure stepped from behind the stone mausoleum.
Robert Sloan held Emma by one hand.
He did not have a weapon visible.
That did not make Daniel feel safer.
Emma saw him.
“Daddy!”
Daniel forced himself not to run.
“I brought it.”
Robert looked exhausted rather than frightening.
His expensive funeral suit had been replaced by wrinkled clothes. His eyes kept moving toward the road behind Daniel.
“Show me.”
Daniel lifted the cross.
Robert’s face changed.
Even now, greed and fear were stronger than shame.
“Send Emma to me.”
“The cross first.”
“No.”
Robert tightened his grip on Emma’s hand.
She whimpered.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You killed your sister.”
Robert flinched.
“Helen destroyed everything.”
“You stole from her church.”
“I borrowed money.”
“You created fake companies.”
“I was going to replace it.”
“With what? More stolen money?”
Robert’s jaw tightened.
Daniel continued.
“Mom found out.”
“She was going to the police.”
“So you changed her pills.”
Robert looked toward the cemetery.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then years of resentment spilled out.
“Helen always had to be the righteous one.”
Daniel felt sick.
Robert spoke faster.
“She didn’t understand what would happen. Your father signed documents too. The foundation would collapse. Charles would go down. Everyone would know.”
“So you murdered her to protect the family?”
“To protect all of us.”
“No. You protected yourself.”
Robert’s expression hardened.
“She was already sick.”
Daniel nearly lunged at him.
Claire’s warning echoed in his head.
Don’t let him make you angry.
He stayed where he was.
“And Mallory?”
Robert shrugged.
“She was useful.”
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“You made her believe Claire killed Mom.”
“I gave her something to focus on.”
“You knew she was unstable with grief.”
“I knew she was angry.”
“You knew she might attack Claire.”
Robert looked at the cross.
“I needed that card gone.”
Daniel finally understood the brutality of it.
Helen had trusted Claire because Claire stood outside the financial web surrounding the Bennett family.
Robert had turned Mallory against her because he needed someone else to destroy the evidence.
If Claire died in the process, that was simply convenient.
“Give me the necklace,” Robert said.
“Emma first.”
Robert hesitated.
Then distant sirens sounded.
His face changed instantly.
“You lied.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Robert yanked Emma backward.
She screamed.
Police emerged from both sides of the cemetery wall.
“Robert Sloan! Let the child go!”
Robert dragged Emma toward the gate.
Daniel moved carefully.
“Rob.”
“Stay back!”
“It’s over.”
“No.”
“The recordings are copied.”
Robert froze.
Daniel lifted the cross.
“This doesn’t matter anymore.”
For the first time, Robert seemed to understand.
Destroying the necklace would destroy nothing.
Helen’s evidence existed in police files.
His financial records had been seized.
His own words had just been transmitted to officers surrounding the cemetery.
His shoulders sagged.
Emma twisted her small hand free.
She ran.
Daniel caught her against his chest.
Police reached Robert seconds later.
He did not resist.
Emma buried her face against Daniel’s neck while Robert was handcuffed beside the gate where Daniel had first seen Claire lying in the dirt.
Three months later, prosecutors charged Robert with Helen’s murder, kidnapping, fraud, theft, evidence tampering, and several related financial crimes.
The church recovered part of the stolen money through seized assets and insurance.
Charles pleaded guilty to conspiracy connected to the financial scheme and obstruction for removing Helen’s medication evidence.
He told prosecutors everything.
It helped the case.
It did not erase what he had done.
Daniel struggled most with Mallory.
She pleaded guilty to the attack on Claire and agreed to testify against Robert.
For weeks, she sent letters from custody.
