My mother listened without moving. When Richard’s voice mentioned her driving the second car, her fingers tightened around the edge of the container.

When the recording ended, she stared at the wall.

“Mom,” I whispered.

“Tell me it’s a lie.””

She closed her eyes.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

My chest tightened.

“That’s not an answer.””

She began crying.

“James told me Emily was making dangerous accusations. He said she was meeting people who wanted to destroy the family business.””

“So you followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid. Your father spent his whole life building that business. James told me that if Emily exposed the financial records, everything your father had built would collapse.””

“And Lily’s money?””

“I didn’t know he was planning to take her money.””

“Did you hit Emily’s car?””

My mother shook her head violently.

“No! I swear to you, Michael, I never touched her car.””

“Then what happened?””

She looked at me through her tears.

“I followed her to the road. I saw the red SUV behind her. Then I saw her car leave the road.””

“Whose SUV was it?””

She swallowed.

“I couldn’t see the driver.””

“Did you stop?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“I saw someone get out of the red SUV and walk toward Emily’s car.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

My mother covered her mouth.

“Michael, I was so frightened.””

“WHO?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“It was James.””

The room went silent.

I sat motionless, unable to reconcile the words with the brother I remembered.

Then my mother reached across the table and grabbed my hand.

“But there’s something else,” she whispered.

“Something I never told the police.””

“What?””

She looked toward the door as if she expected someone to appear.

“James wasn’t the only person at the scene.””

Her voice broke.

“The other person was already waiting beside Emily’s car.””

I leaned forward.

“Who was it?””

My mother began shaking.

Then she whispered a name that made the entire case change direction.

“Vanessa.””
