“I wasn’t there. I didn’t know Emily then. James told me the accident was meant to frighten her into staying quiet, but something went wrong.””
Lily began crying again.
I turned away from Vanessa and carried my daughter to the small sofa near the window.
“Look at me, sweetheart.””
She lifted her face.
“Did Uncle James tell you that himself?””
She nodded.
“Where?””
“In the kitchen. He thought I was asleep under the table because I was playing hide-and-seek.””
A chill crept down my spine.
“What exactly did he say?””
Lily squeezed her eyes shut, searching her memory.
“He said, ‘She wasn’t supposed to die. Now Michael will never let us near the money.””
The room tilted.
I sat beside her, trying to make sense of what I had heard.
Then she added, “Vanessa said you would never know because everybody thought Mommy’s car accident was just an accident.””
I looked up at Vanessa.
She had gone pale again.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
I stood and called 911.
Vanessa rushed toward me.
“Michael, don’t!””
I raised my free hand to keep her back.
“My daughter has been assaulted, and you’ve just admitted you know something about my wife’s death.””
“I didn’t admit anything!””
“I’m telling them what you said.””
She grabbed the edge of the sofa.
“If you call the police, James will destroy you!””
I looked at her.
“Let him try.””
The operator answered. I gave the estate’s address, explained that my five-year-old daughter had been struck, and asked for officers to come immediately.
I did not tell the operator that I believed my brother had arranged an attack on my wife. I had no proof, only a frightened child’s recollection and a message that suggested a financial conspiracy.
But I knew enough not to ignore it.
When I ended the call, I noticed something on the makeup table.
A folded sheet of paper lay partly beneath Vanessa’s wedding gloves.
I pulled it free.
At the top was the name of a law firm I recognized. Beneath it were references to marital property, a proposed power of attorney, and access to financial accounts.
The last page contained a paragraph about Lily’s trust.
I read it twice.
Vanessa had been positioned to request control over certain financial decisions once we were married. The document did not automatically transfer Lily’s money, but it could give Vanessa influence over the people managing it if the arrangement were approved.
At the bottom was a signature line bearing my name.
It was blank.
“Was this what James wanted me to sign?”” I asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
I folded the paper and placed it in my jacket pocket.
Then a man’s voice rang out from the hallway.
“Michael!””
I recognized it immediately.
James.
He appeared in the doorway in his charcoal suit, his wedding boutonniere still pinned neatly to his lapel. Behind him stood Daniel, looking confused, and two estate security guards.
James took one look at Lily’s red cheek.
His expression shifted.
“Good God. What happened to her?””
For one dangerous second, I wanted to believe he was genuinely horrified.
Then his eyes dropped to the black phone in my hand.
He stopped moving.
“Where did you get that?”” he asked.
I stepped in front of Lily.
“That’s the first thing you want to know?””
James glanced at Vanessa.
She gave him the smallest shake of her head.
He saw it.
So did I.
I held up the phone.
“Your message says you wanted me to sign papers that would give you access to Lily’s trust fund.””
James straightened his jacket.
“Those messages are being taken out of context.””
“Then explain them.””
“Not here.””
“Why? Are you afraid the guests might hear what kind of man you are?””
His jaw tightened.
“Michael, you’re upset. You’re about to make a decision you’ll regret for the rest of your life.””
“I already made one mistake. I trusted you.””
James took a slow step forward.
“Listen to me. Whatever Vanessa told you about Emily, it’s a lie.””
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“I didn’t tell you what Vanessa said about Emily.””
For the first time, James looked truly frightened.
His gaze darted toward the open door, then toward the security guards.
I took one step closer.
“How did you know she said something about Emily?””
James opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked down at the screen, and his face changed completely.
I caught a glimpse of the message before he turned it away.
It contained just seven words.
James looked up at me.
And for the first time in my life, my older brother looked at me as if I were the most dangerous person in the room.
