When Emily moved in after the wedding, Margaret behaved as if she were an extended guest.
“I’m changing the locks,” Daniel said.
Emily studied him.
“You mean that?”
“Yes.”
Before she could answer, the monitor beside the bed changed rhythm.
A nurse entered immediately.
Emily stiffened.
“What’s happening?”
The nurse watched the screen.
“Another contraction.”
Pain tightened across Emily’s abdomen.
She gripped Daniel’s hand.
“Daniel.”
“I’m here.”
The contraction lasted almost forty seconds.
When it ended, Emily’s breathing was shallow.
The doctor returned.
“We’re admitting you overnight.”
Emily nodded.
Daniel remained beside her.
Hours passed.
The contractions gradually slowed.
By midnight, the danger of immediate labor had decreased.
Daniel finally allowed himself to breathe.
Emily fell asleep.
He remained in the chair.
At 12:43 a.m., his phone rang again.
This time, the caller was not Margaret.
It was the home security company.
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Whitmore, this is SecureHome monitoring. We received a tamper alert at your residence.”
Daniel’s body went still.
“What kind of tamper alert?”
“Someone attempted to disable the interior camera system.”
Daniel looked through the glass toward Emily.
“Who?”
“We can’t confirm identity remotely.”
“Send me the footage.”
A link appeared thirty seconds later.
Daniel opened it.
The first clip showed the living room after the ambulance left.
Lauren walked toward the security panel.
Margaret followed.
Lauren pointed toward something.
Then she reached upward and disconnected the camera.
Daniel stared at the frozen frame.
Why would they disable his cameras?
A second file appeared.
Recorded approximately three minutes earlier.
This footage came from a small camera mounted above the upstairs hallway.
Daniel pressed play.
The image showed Emily standing near the staircase.
Lauren approached her.
No audio.
Emily appeared to say something.
Lauren stepped closer.
Emily moved backward.
Then Lauren shoved her.
Both hands.
Directly.
Deliberately.
There was no misunderstanding.
No accidental contact.
No slip.
Daniel felt physically sick.
But the video continued.
After Emily fell, Lauren stood at the top of the stairs.
For less than two seconds, something appeared on her face.
Not panic.
Not horror.
Satisfaction.
Then Daniel emerged from the bedroom.
The rest matched what he remembered.
His phone trembled in his hand.
A nurse walked past.
Daniel lowered the screen.
He replayed the first ten seconds.
Again.
Then again.
His sister had not lost control.
She had made a decision.
He saved the video to three separate locations.
Then another thought struck him.
Why had Lauren been angry enough to push Emily?
The argument had begun over paperwork.
Daniel remembered seeing several documents on the hallway table earlier that afternoon.
Emily had discovered something.
Something connected to Lauren.
He returned to the hospital room.
Emily stirred.
“Daniel?”
“I’m here.”
“What time is it?”
“Almost one.”
She saw his face.
“What happened?”
Daniel sat beside her.
“The cameras recorded everything.”
Emily became fully awake.
“The push?”
He nodded.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“So she can’t say I slipped.”
“No.”
Emily looked relieved.
But Daniel did not.
“What were you arguing about before she pushed you?”
Emily hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“I found something in your office.”
His stomach tightened.
“What did you find?”
“Bank records.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Lauren has been taking money from your mother’s trust account.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“How much?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Emily.”
“At least eighty thousand dollars.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Emily continued.
“I confronted her because some of the transfers went through an account with your name attached.”
“My name?”
“She may have been making it look like you authorized them.”
Daniel stood.
The staircase was no longer the entire story.
It was the moment the story became violent.
But whatever had started the conflict had begun much earlier.
Emily whispered, “I think Lauren was scared I was going to tell you.”
Daniel looked toward the fetal monitor.
Their daughter’s heartbeat continued steadily.
For the first time that night, Daniel understood something terrifying.
Lauren had not simply attacked Emily because she hated her.
