“I made excuses for her.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

She rarely softened truth to protect him.

It was one reason he loved her.

Emily continued quietly.

“You made excuses because you didn’t want to lose your family.”

Daniel stared at the hospital parking lot.

“And look what that almost cost me.”

That afternoon, Margaret called the hospital.

Emily was asleep.

Daniel answered.

“What?”

His mother’s voice was cold.

“Lauren says police came to her house.”

“Good.”

“Daniel.”

“She pushed Emily.”

“It was an argument.”

“It was assault.”

“You struck Lauren first.”

“No. She pushed Emily first.”

“She says Emily threatened her.”

“The cameras recorded everything.”

Silence.

Daniel heard his mother inhale.

“What cameras?”

“The ones Lauren tried to disable after we left.”

Another silence.

For the first time, Margaret sounded uncertain.

“Daniel, come home and we’ll discuss this privately.”

“There is nothing private anymore.”

“You are destroying this family.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“No, Mom.”

His voice softened.

“I’m just finally refusing to let the people destroying it blame me for noticing.”

Margaret ended the call.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Ten minutes later, a message arrived.

Mom: You do not understand what Lauren is dealing with.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he typed:

Then tell me.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then disappeared permanently.

Margaret never responded.

At five thirty, Detective Collins called.

“We spoke to your sister.”

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“And?”

“She says the push was accidental.”

“You saw the video.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are we discussing what she says?”

Collins ignored the frustration.

“She also says the financial transfers were approved by your mother.”

Daniel frowned.

“They weren’t.”

“That’s what we need to determine.”

“What else did she say?”

There was a pause.

“She claims you knew about the transfers.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

“What?”

“She says you authorized them.”

“That’s a lie.”

“She provided documents.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What documents?”

“Authorization forms with your signature.”

For several seconds, Daniel could not speak.

He remembered Emily’s warning.

Some transfers were attached to accounts bearing his name.

Someone had not just stolen money.

Someone had built evidence pointing toward him.

“Detective…”

“Yes?”

“I never signed anything.”

“Then we’ll need to verify that.”

Daniel returned to Emily’s room.

She knew immediately.

“What happened?”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Lauren has documents.”

“What documents?”

“With my signature.”

Emily stared at him.

“Forged?”

“They have to be.”

A terrible understanding passed between them.

Lauren had not acted impulsively.

She had prepared.

Accounts.

Documents.

Signatures.

A false trail.

The push on the staircase was not the beginning of her desperation.

It was simply the first time that desperation became impossible to hide.

Daniel looked toward his sleeping wife’s stomach.

Their daughter moved beneath the blanket.

Emily placed a hand there.

“She’s kicking.”

Daniel covered Emily’s hand with his.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel said quietly, “I’m going to find out everything.”

Emily looked at him.

“Even if it destroys your relationship with your family?”
