I looked around the foyer.
At Robert.
At Margaret.
At Claire.
At Jason.
At Daniel.
Every face held a different version of fear.
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa reached into her coat again.
This time she pulled out a thick black folder.
She handed it to me.
“Then read.””
I took it.
The folder was heavier than it looked.
I walked toward the dining table and set it down.
Daniel followed.
“Emily, don’t open that.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because some of it is private.””
I stared at him.
“It’s about my name.””
He went silent.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a bank statement.
The second was a loan application.
The third was a photocopy of my driver’s license.
I froze.
My name.
My address.
My date of birth.
My signature.
My stomach turned.
“How did you get this?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Daniel sent it to me.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He stepped backward.
“I sent it because the bank required identification.””
“Why did you have a copy of my driver’s license?””
“You gave it to me.””
“For what?””
He hesitated.
“For the mortgage.””
“I never gave you permission to send it to anyone.””
“I was your husband.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
He looked away.
Vanessa opened the folder to another page.
“This is the second loan.””
I stared at the number.
My vision blurred.
One hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa did.
“This money was transferred from the business account into a personal account.””
“Whose?””
She looked at Daniel.
“His.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“He used some of it to pay old gambling debts.””
Daniel immediately snapped.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa pulled out another statement.
“It is.””
“You don’t know everything.””
“I know exactly where the money went.””
She placed the page on the table.
There were dozens of transactions.
Wire transfers.
Online betting sites.
Casino withdrawals.
Cash advances.
I stared at the page.
Then at Daniel.
“How much?””
He looked at the floor.
Vanessa answered.
“Over eighty thousand.””
Margaret gasped.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“I have the records.””
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“Tell her it’s not true.””
Daniel couldn’t.
I slowly lowered myself into a chair.
My hand was still burning.
My cheek still throbbed.
But suddenly those things felt distant.
“Why my name?””
Daniel crouched in front of me.
“Emily.””
“Answer me.””
“I needed collateral.””
“You had collateral.””
“The bank wouldn’t approve me.””
“So you used me.””
“No.””
“You used my name.””
“I thought I’d repay everything.””
“You used my name.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
Vanessa opened another section of the folder.
“This is where it gets worse.””
Daniel stood quickly.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’ve lied long enough.””
She slid a document toward me.
It was a notarized statement.
At the bottom was a signature.
Daniel’s.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My hands began to shake.
“What is this?””
Vanessa answered.
“A confession.””
Daniel’s face went white.
“That isn’t a confession.””
I looked at him.
“It says you knowingly used my identity to secure the loan.””
“I was under pressure.””
“It says you represented me as a consenting co-borrower.””
“I believed you would agree.””
I stared.
“You believed?””
He looked desperate.
“Emily, we were married.””
“At the time?””
He hesitated.
“We were engaged.””
“So you knew I didn’t consent.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I heard the clock in the hallway.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
I looked at Robert.
He was staring at his son like he had never seen him before.
Margaret whispered, “Daniel.””
He turned.
“Mom.””
“You did that?””
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“I was trying to save the restaurant.””
Margaret shook her head.
“You used your wife.””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“You could have destroyed her credit.””
“I know.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Why are you doing this?””
She looked surprised.
“Doing what?””
“Bringing me all this.””
She was quiet for a moment.
“Because he lied to me too.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“He promised me equity in the restaurant.””
Daniel muttered, “I was going to give it to you.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice hardened.
“You promised me ownership.””
“I was trying to make things right.””
“You used my money to pay your debts.””
“I told you I’d repay you.””
“And then you offered me a house you didn’t own.””
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn’t know the house was protected by Robert’s trust arrangement until later.””
I glanced at Robert.
“Trust arrangement?””
Robert nodded.
“That is why the title is secure.””
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel told me the house belonged to his family.””
I looked at him.
“You told her that?””
He nodded weakly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
