“Because she wouldn’t have given me the money otherwise.””
I felt sick.
Vanessa pulled out another document.
“This is the agreement he gave me.””
I read it.
It was a security agreement.
It referenced the house.
It stated that if Daniel defaulted, Vanessa could pursue the property as collateral.
But there was a problem.
The property description contained my name as owner.
And underneath it was a line where my signature should have been.
It was blank.
I looked at Vanessa.
“I didn’t sign this.””
“I know.””
“Then how did the bank accept it?””
“They didn’t.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
She tapped the document.
“The bank rejected the security interest.””
“Why?””
“Because the title company discovered that Daniel didn’t have the authority to pledge the property.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You promised you wouldn’t tell her.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You promised me the house.””
“I was desperate.””
“So was I.””
She looked at me.
“I put everything I had into that restaurant.””
I swallowed.
“How much?””
“A hundred thousand dollars.””
Daniel immediately said, “It wasn’t all at once.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Does that matter?””
No one answered.
She continued.
“I trusted him.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because he told me his family would stand behind him.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I was stupid.””
I understood the feeling.
I closed the folder.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Robert said, “There is still something missing.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked directly at me.
“The second loan wasn’t taken out only to cover gambling debt.””
I frowned.
“What else?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“You should tell her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Tell her.””
“No.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“He used part of it to buy something.””
I stared at Daniel.
“What did you buy?””
Silence.
“What did you buy?””
Daniel swallowed.
“A property.””
My stomach dropped.
“What property?””
“An apartment.””
“Where?””
He hesitated.
“Charlotte.””
I stared.
“Why?””
He looked away.
“For the restaurant.””
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa’s voice was flat.
“It wasn’t for the restaurant.””
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
She pulled a photograph from the folder.
A condo building.
Modern.
Expensive.
A number was written on the back.
*Unit 1407.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who lives there?””
He didn’t answer.
I felt something cold move through me.
“Daniel.””
“Emily—”
“Who lives there?””
Vanessa said quietly, “His other family.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.
“That’s not what it is.””
I stood.
“Other family?””
“Emily, listen.””
“Who?””
He stared at me.
Then Margaret started crying.
Actual tears.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
She covered her mouth.
And suddenly I understood.
She knew.
She knew about the apartment.
She knew about the debt.
She knew about Vanessa.
She knew about everything.
I turned toward her.
“Who lives there?””
She shook her head.
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“Please.””
“Who?””
Robert looked at his wife.
“Tell her.””
Margaret wouldn’t.
Vanessa reached into the folder and pulled out one more photograph.
This one wasn’t of Daniel and Vanessa.
It was a picture of a young woman standing outside the condominium.
She was holding the hand of a little boy.
The boy looked about five years old.
I stared at the photograph.
My heart began pounding.
The woman looked familiar.
Not because I had met her.
Because I had seen her before.
In a picture.
On Daniel’s phone.
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
His face collapsed.
“Emily…”
“Who is she?””
He whispered, “Her name is Rachel.””
“And the boy?””
He didn’t answer.
I felt my knees weaken.
“The boy.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“His name is Noah.””
I stared at him.
“Is he yours?””
Daniel nodded.
I couldn’t hear anything else.
The room seemed to disappear.
The Christmas lights blurred.
The voices faded.
All I could hear was blood rushing through my ears.
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying.
Robert looked furious.
Claire had covered her mouth.
And Daniel—
Daniel was staring at me as though he had been waiting years for this moment and dreading it at the same time.
I whispered, “You have a son?””
He nodded.
“How old?””
“Five.””
I stepped backward.
Five.
Daniel and I had been married for three years.
Which meant the child had been born before our wedding.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Since before we got married?””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was afraid.””
“You let me marry you without telling me you had a child.””
“I thought I could explain.””
“When?””
He couldn’t answer.
I laughed.
It was a horrible sound.
“You never intended to tell me.””
“That isn’t true.””
“Then when?””
Silence.
“When were you going to tell your wife that you had a five-year-old son?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
I turned toward Robert.
