Chapter 1 – The Push Beside the Glass DoorsClaire Bennett never saw Vanessa’s hands coming.
Claire’s body pitched forward.
Her cream maternity dress flared around her knees as she threw out one hand, instinctively twisting so she would not land directly on her stomach. Her shoulder struck the patio first, then her hip, and the shock of the impact shot through her body like electricity.
“Honey!”
The scream tore out of her before she even realized she had made it.
Every conversation around the backyard stopped.
A champagne glass hit the stone patio and shattered.
Claire curled both arms around her belly.
For one horrible second, the baby did not move.
Inside the living room, Ethan Bennett turned.
He had been standing near the kitchen island speaking to his cousin about a construction project in Maryland. He still held a glass of sparkling water in one hand.
When he saw his pregnant wife on the ground, everything in his face changed.
The glass slipped from his fingers.
“Claire?”
His eyes moved from her to Vanessa.
His sister stood at the doorway, breathing hard, her dark blouse pulled tight across her shoulders. There was no horror on her face.
No surprise.
Only anger.
Ethan crossed the room so quickly that a chair went over behind him.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“She tripped.”
Claire looked up.
“No.”
The word came out weakly.
Ethan stopped inches from his sister.
“She pushed me.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re lying.”
Ethan’s hand moved before anyone could stop him.
The slap cracked across the patio.
Vanessa’s head snapped sideways.
A collective gasp rose from the guests.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Ethan shouted. “She’s pregnant!”
Vanessa stumbled into the edge of an outdoor chair and caught herself.
“You hit me?”
“You pushed my wife!”
“She was going to destroy this family!”
That sentence changed everything.
Claire heard it.
So did Ethan.
But before either of them could respond, Margaret Bennett stormed through the glass doors.
Ethan’s mother had always been the kind of woman who could silence a room without raising her voice. At sixty-two, she still carried herself like the wife of the late Warren Bennett, founder of Bennett Development Group, a man whose photograph hung in three corporate offices and whose name was engraved on a wing of a Baltimore children’s hospital.
Now Margaret was not silent.
She grabbed Ethan by the shoulder, spun him, and struck him across the face.
“How dare you hit your sister!”
Ethan stared at her.
A red mark appeared on his cheek.
For the first time that afternoon, he looked less furious than stunned.
“Mom.”
“You will apologize.”
“My wife is on the ground.”
“Vanessa said she tripped.”
Claire felt something twist low in her abdomen.
She sucked in a breath.
“Ethan.”
He turned immediately.
The anger vanished from his expression.
“What?”
Claire looked down at her dress.
A dark wet spot was spreading beneath her.
Ethan’s face drained of color.
“Oh, God.”
He dropped beside her.
“Claire, look at me.”
“My stomach hurts.”
Behind him, Vanessa had gone pale.
Margaret took one step forward.
“Perhaps we should—”
“Stay away from her.”
Ethan’s voice was quieter now, and somehow that made it more frightening.
Margaret stopped.
Claire squeezed his wrist.
“The baby.”
“I’ve got you.”
Another cramp tightened across her abdomen.
She closed her eyes.
That was when Margaret moved again.
She came toward Ethan, speaking rapidly.
“You’re overreacting. She fell onto her side. We don’t need the police or ambulances here with half the neighborhood watching.”
Ethan slowly stood.
“You think I care who’s watching?”
“Think about the family.”
“My family is lying on the ground.”
Margaret reached for his arm.
He pulled away.
She lunged again, furious now, and Ethan shoved her back.
He did not appear to realize how close she was to the pool.
Margaret stumbled.
Her heel caught the coping.
For one suspended second, she windmilled both arms.
Then she fell backward into the water.
The splash drenched the nearby chairs.
Guests screamed.
Vanessa rushed forward.
“You psycho!”
Ethan stepped between her and Claire.
“Don’t come near my wife.”
“You shoved Mom into the pool!”
“And you pushed my pregnant wife onto stone!”
Vanessa came at him.
Ethan caught her by the arms and shoved her away.
She crashed backward into the decorated serving rack beside the patio.
Silver trays tipped.
Glasses fell.
A vase shattered.
Vanessa screamed as she grabbed the frame to keep herself upright.
Ethan did not follow her.
He immediately turned back to Claire.
